FLOYD DEAD ZONE

Brown water produced by runoff from Hurricane Floyd meets blue-green water in Pamlico Sound near Cedar Island, N.C., Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999. Marine scientist Hans Paerl of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Institute of Marine Sciences, says the brown runoff is depleting oxygen levels in the sound, creating a "dead zone" that could have long-term effects on the health of the nation's second-largest marine estuary.
