An unpublished version of my cover art, for The Mammoth Book of the End of the World (aka Apocalyptic SF). I have a thing for post-catastrophic, empty cities and I continued tinkering with this image long after finishing the official job. I wanted to create something creepy and silent, as though some time had passed since the the event, yet imply that the threat is still there. I wasn't sure whether or not to include the bodies – this kind of scene never quite looks authentic without them. They're not on the published version, and they are of course not real – they're stock:
