Une \u00e9quipe de climatologue fran\u00e7ais vient de reconstituer 1000 ans de ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne climatique<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">HIVERS. L\u2019oscillation nord atlantique (NAO selon l\u2019acronyme anglais) est un ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne li\u00e9 \u00e0 la diff\u00e9rence de pression entre les d\u00e9pressions nord-atlantique et l\u2019anticyclone des A\u00e7ores. Le ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne est dit n\u00e9gatif lorsque cette diff\u00e9rence de pression est plus faible que d\u2019habitude, et il est positif quand cette diff\u00e9rence est plus importante. Les cons\u00e9quences sur les conditions hivernales sur tout le pourtour de l\u2019oc\u00e9an atlantique sont extr\u00eamement marqu\u00e9es. Le ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne est connu mais reste impr\u00e9visible. Il serait pourtant d\u2019un grand int\u00e9r\u00eat de pouvoir l\u2019anticiper pour pr\u00e9parer par exemple la production d\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 et de chauffage sur tous les pays europ\u00e9ens. Aussi, le travail qui vient d\u2019\u00eatre effectu\u00e9 par le laboratoire des sciences du climat et de l\u2019environnement (LSCE, CEA\/CNRS\/USQV) publi\u00e9 le 2 juillet dans Nature constitue une \u00e9tape importante vers une pr\u00e9vision plus fiable et affin\u00e9e. Les chercheurs ont en effet reconstitu\u00e9 ann\u00e9e apr\u00e8s ann\u00e9e, 1000 ans de NAO en compilant 48 enregistrements climatiques issus d\u2019archives naturelles autour de l\u2019Atlantique. Cernes des arbres pr\u00e9lev\u00e9s au Maroc et en \u00c9cosse, d\u00e9p\u00f4ts min\u00e9raux dans les grottes, carottes de glace du Groenland sont quelques-uns des signaux les plus connus. \u00ab\u00a0Comme les archives climatiques sont des mesures indirectes, il faut en combiner plusieurs pour extraire le signal commun \u00e0 toutes qui d\u00e9finit une circulation atmosph\u00e9rique de grande \u00e9chelle. Plus il y a de r\u00e9gions repr\u00e9sent\u00e9es, plus le signal commun ressort distinctement\u00a0\u00bb explique Pablo Ortega, chercheur au LSCE principal auteur de l\u2019\u00e9tude.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">VOLCANISME. La reconstitution des NAO pass\u00e9es a permis de distinguer les \u00e9pisodes de pr\u00e9dominance des phases positives aux 13e et 14e si\u00e8cles, provoquant une p\u00e9riode d\u2019une grande douceur climatique. Ce travail a surtout mis en exergue le r\u00f4le des \u00e9ruptions volcaniques. Deux ans apr\u00e8s chacune des onze \u00e9ruptions les mieux connues du dernier mill\u00e9naire, la NAO devient syst\u00e9matiquement positive. Jouant un r\u00f4le d\u2019\u00e9cran au rayonnement solaire, les poussi\u00e8res volcaniques ont \u00e9galement un effet indirect et de long terme sur les changements de circulation oc\u00e9anique de grande \u00e9chelle en hiver. D\u2019autres \u00e9tudes montrent aussi des effets \u00e0 plus long terme jusqu\u2019\u00e0 20 ans apr\u00e8s l\u2019\u00e9ruption. \u00ab\u00a0Nous avons d\u00e9montr\u00e9 qu\u2019il existe un type de r\u00e9ponse claire d\u2019\u00e9v\u00e8nements comme les \u00e9ruptions volcaniques sur la circulation atmosph\u00e9rique \u00e0 grande \u00e9chelle qu\u2019il faudrait inclure dans les mod\u00e8les climatiques si on veut faire des pr\u00e9dictions fiables de la temp\u00e9rature et des pr\u00e9cipitions en Europe\u00a0\u00bb conclut Pablo Ortega.
