N\u00e9anmoins, une nouvelle \u00e9tude montre que certains organismes terriens pourraient survivre sur la plan\u00e8te rouge. En effet, une \u00e9quipe de chercheurs de l&rsquo;Universit\u00e9 de l&rsquo;Arkansas, aux \u00c9tats-Unis, s&rsquo;est pench\u00e9e sur les organismes \u00e0 m\u00e9tabolisme m\u00e9thanog\u00e8ne. Concr\u00e8tement, ce sont des micro-organismes qui produisent du m\u00e9thane gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l&rsquo;hydrog\u00e8ne et au dioxyde de carbone. Ces organismes sont notamment pr\u00e9sents dans les mar\u00e9cages, les intestins des grands herbivores et dans la mati\u00e8re en d\u00e9composition. Il est donc possible que l&rsquo;eau, d\u00e9tect\u00e9e en sous sol, puisse abriter ce genre d&rsquo;organismes, mettant \u00e0 jour une nouvelle hypoth\u00e8se pour les traces de m\u00e9thane que Curiosity a relev\u00e9es. En effet, ces organismes simples ne n\u00e9cessitent pas d&rsquo;oxyg\u00e8ne, de nutriments organiques ou de photosynth\u00e8se, ce qui indique que les bact\u00e9ries m\u00e9thanog\u00e8nes sont id\u00e9ales pour vivre dans des environnements souterrains.
