Or, les oc\u00e9anographes s\u2019int\u00e9ressent depuis peu \u00e0 d\u2019autres vagues qui ne sont pas g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9es par la friction air-eau des d\u00e9pressions, les vagues internes, aussi appel\u00e9es \u00ab ondes internes \u00bb.<\/p>\n<p class=\"size-10\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00ab C\u2019est l\u2019explorateur norv\u00e9gien Fridtjof Nansen qui mit en \u00e9vidence cette manifestation au d\u00e9but du XX\u00e8 si\u00e8cle alors qu\u2019il remarquait la difficult\u00e9 de son bateau \u00e0 aller de l\u2019avant sur une mer pourtant des plus calmes \u00bb, rappelle le site <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.surfsession.com\/2013\/02\/08\/science-le-phenomene-des-vagues-internes\/\" target=\"_blank\">Surfsession<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"paywall-placeholder\" class=\"paywall-placeholder\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Si la vague la plus haute enregistr\u00e9e par un instrument a atteint 32,3 m\u00e8tres, et la plus haute vague observ\u00e9e visuellement 34 m\u00e8tres, les ondes internes peuvent atteindre plus de dix fois cette taille.<\/div>\n<div id=\"divVideoStepAdTop\" class=\"divVideoStep\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Une \u00e9quipe de chercheurs du MIT a construit et d\u00e9ploy\u00e9 des instruments dans la turbulente mer de Chine, afin de mesurer ces monstres marins \u00ab du berceau \u00e0 la tombe \u00bb, rapporte le <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonmagazine.com\/news\/blog\/2015\/05\/07\/mit-measures-largest-waves-ever-documented\/\" target=\"_blank\">Boston Magazine<\/a><\/em>.<\/div>\n<div class=\"divVideoStep\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"divVideoStep\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"size-10\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pour ce faire, ils ont attach\u00e9s des instruments le long de c\u00e2bles de trois kilom\u00e8tres, plong\u00e9s dans les profondeurs oc\u00e9aniques. Rien de moins que \u00ab les plus grandes vagues jamais enregistr\u00e9es \u00bb, indiquent les scientifiques dans le magazine <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nature\/journal\/v521\/n7550\/full\/nature14399.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Nature<\/em><\/a>, o\u00f9 leur \u00e9tude a \u00e9t\u00e9 publi\u00e9e jeudi. Les diff\u00e9rentes \u00ab couches d\u2019eau \u00bb ne se d\u00e9placent pas forc\u00e9ment dans la m\u00eame direction, d\u2019o\u00f9 ces ondes internes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"size-10\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tout comme les vagues que l\u2019on connait finissent par se briser en surface ou sur le littoral, ces vagues internes finissent par s\u2019\u00e9craser contre les fonds oc\u00e9aniques ou les plateaux continentaux, apr\u00e8s avoir parfois parcouru des milliers de kilom\u00e8tres pendant des semaines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"size-10\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Leur \u00e9tude n\u2019est pas simplement un passe-temps de surfeurs frustr\u00e9s de ne pouvoir les dompter. Ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne naturel affecte beaucoup de processus oc\u00e9aniques, comme la dispersion de nutriments pour la photosynth\u00e8se\u00a0 ou de s\u00e9diments.
