Une solution efficace pour nettoyer les orbites terrestres des petits d\u00e9bris encombrants et dangereux qui y gravitent en nombre croissant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">D\u2019un c\u00f4t\u00e9, le t\u00e9lescope EUSO, d\u2019abord con\u00e7u pour d\u00e9tecter, \u00e0 partir de la station spatiale internationale en orbite, des particules cosmiques tr\u00e8s \u00e9nerg\u00e9tiques \u00e0 leur entr\u00e9e dans l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re. Il est d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 au centre de recherche japonais Riken. De l\u2019autre, un laser CAN (Coherent amplification network), nouveau concept de laser superpuissant, d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 notamment \u00e0 l\u2019Ecole Polytechnique. En installant sur la station ISS ces deux instruments, une \u00e9quipe internationale esp\u00e8re d\u00e9truire en quelques ann\u00e9es la plupart des d\u00e9bris de petites tailles qui s\u2019accumulent autour de la terre, et sont dangereux pour les satellites, et la station elle-m\u00eame.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Le t\u00e9lescope sera charg\u00e9 de d\u00e9tecter et pister les petits d\u00e9bris (de l\u2019ordre du centim\u00e8tre), tandis que le laser les d\u00e9stabilisera pour les faire entrer dans l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re, entr\u00e9e qui les d\u00e9truira.<\/p><div class=\"1665f18d14f35dd9e7566e1a8ac9a3e9\" data-index=\"2\" style=\"float: none; margin:10px 0 10px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n     data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2860849627502538\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"3019501113\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">En fait, cette utilisation du laser est l\u00e0-aussi une sorte de d\u00e9tournement de son objectif initial : le laser CAN est \u00e0 l\u2019origine con\u00e7u pour r\u00e9aliser de futurs acc\u00e9l\u00e9rateurs de particules tr\u00e8s compacts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Son principe repose sur la mise en parall\u00e8le de centaines ou milliers de fibres optiques amplificatrices, dont les faisceaux lasers recombin\u00e9s de mani\u00e8re coh\u00e9rente produiront des impulsions tr\u00e8s courtes et tr\u00e8s puissantes, \u00e0 des cadences de milliers de tirs par seconde.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Le centre Riken et ses partenaires veulent d\u2019abord envoyer \u00e0 l\u2019ISS un petit t\u00e9lescope (20cm) avec un laser CAN de 100 fibres. Si tout se passe bien, l\u2019op\u00e9ration sera suivie d\u2019un instrument de 3 m\u00e8tres de diam\u00e8tre avec un laser de 10.000 fibres, capable de d\u00e9truire tous les d\u00e9bris \u00e0 100 km \u00e0 la ronde.
