Mais lorsque le panache du volcan islandais Eyjafj\u00f6ll a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9tudi\u00e9&#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">par les chercheurs clermontois en mars 2010, leurs mesures ont conduit a reconsid\u00e9rer l&rsquo;importance des nanoparticules secondaires.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Plus petites que les cendres qui sont d&rsquo;une taille sup\u00e9rieure au microm\u00e8tre, les nanoparticules croissent au fil des jours, jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 atteindre des tailles suffisamment grandes pour agir comme noyau de condensation nuageuse. C&rsquo;est-\u00e0-dire que les fines particules deviennent responsables de la formation des nuages et de la pluie, lorsqu&rsquo;elles rencontrent des mol\u00e9cules d&rsquo;eau dans l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re. C&rsquo;est ce que r\u00e9v\u00e8lent deux \u00e9tudes franco-am\u00e9ricaines r\u00e9centes, auxquelles des chercheurs du Laboratoire atmosph\u00e8res, milieux, observations spatiales (LATMOS\/IPSL, UVSQ \/ CNRS \/ Universit\u00e9 Paris 6) ont particip\u00e9. Les \u00e9normes quantit\u00e9s de donn\u00e9es obtenues durant la derni\u00e8re d\u00e9cennie gr\u00e2ce aux nombreuses observations satellite et au sol permettent aujourd&rsquo;hui d&rsquo;examiner pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment tous ces for\u00e7ages et ainsi de tester plus efficacement les mod\u00e8les num\u00e9riques du climat.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Parmi ces for\u00e7ages, les a\u00e9rosols produits en quantit\u00e9s colossales dans la stratosph\u00e8re (partie haute de l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re) par les \u00e9ruptions volcaniques majeures, telles que celles des volcans Tambora en 1815 ou du Mont Pinatubo en 1991, sont connus pour r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir efficacement le rayonnement solaire vers l&rsquo;espace et donc pour refroidir de fa\u00e7on significative l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re au niveau du sol. Ces a\u00e9rosols sont compos\u00e9s principalement de gouttelettes d&rsquo;acide sulfurique provenant de l&rsquo;oxydation du dioxyde de soufre expuls\u00e9 par ces volcans.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Or, une augmentation lente de leur concentration durant la derni\u00e8re d\u00e9cennie a \u00e9t\u00e9 mise en \u00e9vidence par une \u00e9tude publi\u00e9e en 2009 et r\u00e9alis\u00e9e \u00e0 partir de mesures au sol. Cependant, aucune \u00e9ruption volcanique majeure ne s&rsquo;\u00e9tant produite durant cette p\u00e9riode, les auteurs avaient alors attribu\u00e9 cette augmentation aux \u00e9missions de soufre par les mines de charbon chinoises.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Pour d\u00e9terminer pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment l&rsquo;origine et estimer l&rsquo;ampleur de cette augmentation des a\u00e9rosols stratosph\u00e9riques au cours de la derni\u00e8re d\u00e9cennie, des \u00e9quipes de chercheurs (2) ont analys\u00e9 les s\u00e9ries de donn\u00e9es de concentrations d&rsquo;a\u00e9rosols acquises par plusieurs missions spatiales (3).
