N&rsquo;y voyez pas une blague d&rsquo;ing\u00e9nieur voulant se payer la t\u00eate d&rsquo;un journaliste, mais une id\u00e9e s\u00e9rieusement \u00e9tudi\u00e9e par la Nasa et par plusieurs instituts de recherche, notamment aux \u00c9tats-Unis et au Japon.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">   <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Imaginez un monte-charge s&rsquo;\u00e9levant le long d&rsquo;un c\u00e2ble de 35 000 kilom\u00e8tres jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 une plate-forme spatiale plac\u00e9e en orbite g\u00e9ostationnaire. Et pour tendre ce c\u00e2ble, un contrepoids fix\u00e9, lui, \u00e0 100 000 kilom\u00e8tres du sol. N&rsquo;oublions pas qu&rsquo;en tournant, la Terre cr\u00e9e ce qu&rsquo;on appelle la force centrifuge. Le c\u00e2ble se tend alors comme les lani\u00e8res d&rsquo;une fronde en rotation. Cette id\u00e9e na\u00eet en 1895 dans l&rsquo;esprit g\u00e9nial du pionnier russe des vols spatiaux, Konstantin Tsiokovsky. Lors d&rsquo;une visite \u00e0 la tour Eiffel, il imagine une tour g\u00e9ante reli\u00e9e \u00e0 des ch\u00e2teaux c\u00e9lestes par un chemin de fer. Mais, \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9poque, le projet \u00e9tait irr\u00e9alisable, aussi tomba-t-il dans l&rsquo;oubli jusqu&rsquo;en 1979, quand l&rsquo;\u00e9crivain de science-fiction Arthur C. Clarke s&rsquo;en empara dans son ouvrage Les fontaines du paradis. William Flew, un sp\u00e9cialiste des mat\u00e9riaux au King&rsquo;s College de Londres, affirme que de r\u00e9cents progr\u00e8s permettent enfin d&rsquo;envisager la fabrication d&rsquo;un c\u00e2ble suffisamment solide pour r\u00e9sister \u00e0 la tension immense, aux vents et aux orages. Soit une r\u00e9sistance d&rsquo;au moins 180 fois celle de l&rsquo;acier, selon Yoshio Aokki, professeur d&rsquo;ing\u00e9nierie et directeur de la Japan Space Elevator Association. Reste \u00e0 inventer le rouet capable de filer ces nanotubes. Une \u00e9quipe de l&rsquo;universit\u00e9 de Cambridge vient d&rsquo;annoncer la fabrication de premi\u00e8res mini-fibres. Un premier pas.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">La propulsion de la cabine, de m\u00eame que son freinage lors de la descente, est le deuxi\u00e8me gros probl\u00e8me \u00e0 r\u00e9soudre. Les Am\u00e9ricains imaginent de braquer des rayons laser depuis le sol sur le v\u00e9hicule ascensionnel pour l&rsquo;approvisionner en \u00e9nergie. Les Japonais, eux, r\u00e9fl\u00e9chissent \u00e0 un proc\u00e9d\u00e9 copi\u00e9 sur la propulsion magn\u00e9tique de leur train. \u00ab\u00a0Les nanotubes de carbone \u00e9tant de bons conducteurs d&rsquo;\u00e9lectricit\u00e9, nous envisageons la pr\u00e9sence d&rsquo;un second c\u00e2ble qui fournirait l&rsquo;\u00e9nergie n\u00e9cessaire tout au long du trajet\u00a0\u00bb, poursuit Aokki. D&rsquo;autres projets envisagent d&rsquo;utiliser l&rsquo;\u00e9nergie solaire, m\u00eame nucl\u00e9aire. Quoi qu&rsquo;il en soit, les ing\u00e9nieurs ont calcul\u00e9 qu&rsquo;un tel monte-charge n\u00e9cessitera cent fois moins d&rsquo;\u00e9nergie qu&rsquo;un tir de fus\u00e9e.
