L\u2019Himalaya serait donc une gigantesque pompe \u00e0 carbone efficace, selon les conclusions d\u2019une \u00e9tude de Valier Galy et Christian France-Lanord, du Centre de recherches p\u00e9trographiques et g\u00e9ochimiques de Nancy (CNRS-INSU).<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00c0 partir d&rsquo;un bilan g\u00e9ochimique couvrant l&rsquo;ensemble du bassin de l&rsquo;Himalaya, depuis la source, les formations himalayennes, jusqu&rsquo;au lieu de d\u00e9p\u00f4t ultime des s\u00e9diments en baie du Bengale (oc\u00e9an Indien), ces chercheurs de Nancy et de Paris ont pu quantifier ces m\u00e9canismes et mieux en appr\u00e9hender l&rsquo;efficacit\u00e9 de l&rsquo;Himalaya comme pompe \u00e0 dioxyde de carbone (CO2). Ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne permet le stockage du carbone dans un r\u00e9servoir naturel g\u00e9ologique qu&rsquo;est un bassin oc\u00e9anique. Publi\u00e9e dans Nature le 15 novembre, ces travaux illustrent le r\u00f4le de l&rsquo;\u00e9rosion dans le cycle du carbone et la r\u00e9gulation \u00e0 long terme du climat. Sur des \u00e9chelles de temps de quelques dizaines de millions d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es, l&rsquo;\u00e9rosion des cha\u00eenes de montagne contribue ainsi \u00e0 refroidir le climat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Ainsi, sur le long terme, \u00e0 des \u00e9chelles de temps g\u00e9ologiques, la consommation de gaz carbonique (CO2) de l\u2019Himalaya contribue \u00e0 refroidir le climat, concluent les chercheurs : \u00ab En tout \u00e9tat de cause, l&rsquo;\u00e9rosion physique tr\u00e8s intense de la cha\u00eene himalayenne joue un r\u00f4le pr\u00e9pond\u00e9rant \u00bb.
