Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 ce nouvel appareil de mesure, il sera d\u00e9sormais possible de recueillir des donn\u00e9es sur leur structure, leur fr\u00e9quence ou leur volume.<br \/>\nJusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 la venue de CloudSat, les satellites d&rsquo;\u00e9tude de l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re arrivaient \u00e0 bien repr\u00e9senter la surface des nuages, mais n\u2019en donnaient qu\u2019une repr\u00e9sentation en 2 dimensions. Les donn\u00e9es sur l&rsquo;\u00e9paisseur \u2013 indispensables pour d\u00e9terminer le volume des nuages, de m\u00eame que la quantit\u00e9 d&rsquo;eau, de neige ou de glace en pr\u00e9sence \u2013 ne pouvaient \u00eatre obtenues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\">Les nuages jouent un r\u00f4le non-n\u00e9gligeable sur la quantit\u00e9 d&rsquo;\u00e9nergie solaire retenue dans l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re ou r\u00e9fl\u00e9chie dans l&rsquo;espace. Un infime changement dans la couverture nuageuse peut fortement modifier le climat. Selon certains scientifiques, les nuages auraient m\u00eame une incidence plus grande que les gaz \u00e0 effet de serre et les autres facteurs li\u00e9s aux changements climatiques<br \/>\nLe nouveau satellite analysera \u00e9galement la fa\u00e7on dont la lumi\u00e8re est absorb\u00e9e par les diff\u00e9rentes couches de l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re. Ce dispositif devrait permettre de mieux comprendre les processus de transport des a\u00e9rosols et les m\u00e9canismes du climat.<br \/>\nLes a\u00e9rosols atmosph\u00e9riques sont des particules tr\u00e8s fines suspendues dans l&rsquo;air. Ils sont form\u00e9s par la dispersion de substances \u00e0 la surface de la Terre (a\u00e9rosols primaires), ou par la r\u00e9action des gaz dans l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re (a\u00e9rosols secondaires).
