Le <strong data-start=\"228\" data-end=\"265\">Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope<\/strong> doit d\u00e9coller le <strong data-start=\"283\" data-end=\"374\">dimanche 30 ao\u00fbt 2026 \u00e0 7 h 26, heure de Floride, soit 13 h 26 en France m\u00e9tropolitaine<\/strong>, depuis le complexe de lancement 39A du Kennedy Space Center. Il sera plac\u00e9 au sommet d\u2019une fus\u00e9e <strong data-start=\"473\" data-end=\"499\">Falcon Heavy de SpaceX<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"540\" data-end=\"854\">Si la mission se d\u00e9roule comme pr\u00e9vu, Roman rejoindra la famille des grands observatoires spatiaux aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de Hubble et du James Webb Space Telescope. Mais sa sp\u00e9cialit\u00e9 sera diff\u00e9rente : plut\u00f4t que de se concentrer sur des portions tr\u00e8s \u00e9troites du ciel, il pourra observer d\u2019immenses r\u00e9gions en une seule fois.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1xl2c00\" data-start=\"856\" data-end=\"928\">Un t\u00e9lescope con\u00e7u pour cartographier l\u2019Univers \u00e0 tr\u00e8s grande \u00e9chelle<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"930\" data-end=\"1114\">Le Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope doit son nom \u00e0 <strong data-start=\"982\" data-end=\"1003\">Nancy Grace Roman<\/strong>, premi\u00e8re astronome en chef de la NASA et figure majeure du d\u00e9veloppement de l\u2019astronomie spatiale am\u00e9ricaine.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1116\" data-end=\"1417\">L\u2019observatoire mesure environ <strong data-start=\"1146\" data-end=\"1169\">12,7 m\u00e8tres de haut<\/strong>, 4,4 m\u00e8tres de large et affiche une masse proche de <strong data-start=\"1222\" data-end=\"1234\">8 tonnes<\/strong>. Sa construction a \u00e9t\u00e9 achev\u00e9e fin 2025, et fait notable, son lancement intervient plusieurs mois plus t\u00f4t que pr\u00e9vu dans le calendrier initial.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1419\" data-end=\"1596\">Roman poss\u00e8de un miroir principal d\u2019environ <strong data-start=\"1463\" data-end=\"1477\">2,4 m\u00e8tres<\/strong>, comparable \u00e0 celui de Hubble. Sa grande diff\u00e9rence r\u00e9side cependant dans son <strong data-start=\"1556\" data-end=\"1595\">champ de vision beaucoup plus vaste<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1598\" data-end=\"1812\">Son instrument principal, le <strong data-start=\"1627\" data-end=\"1652\">Wide Field Instrument<\/strong>, permettra de r\u00e9aliser de gigantesques relev\u00e9s astronomiques dans l\u2019infrarouge. Roman pourra ainsi \u00e9tudier simultan\u00e9ment des millions d\u2019\u00e9toiles et de galaxies.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"j3cjqa\" data-start=\"1814\" data-end=\"1863\">Comprendre l\u2019\u00e9nergie noire et la mati\u00e8re noire<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1865\" data-end=\"2041\">L\u2019un des objectifs majeurs de Roman sera de tenter de r\u00e9soudre l\u2019une des plus grandes \u00e9nigmes de la cosmologie moderne : <strong data-start=\"1986\" data-end=\"2041\">pourquoi l\u2019expansion de l\u2019Univers acc\u00e9l\u00e8re-t-elle ?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2043\" data-end=\"2186\">Cette acc\u00e9l\u00e9ration est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement attribu\u00e9e \u00e0 une myst\u00e9rieuse composante appel\u00e9e <strong data-start=\"2126\" data-end=\"2143\">\u00e9nergie noire<\/strong>, dont la nature reste totalement inconnue.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2188\" data-end=\"2373\">En observant la distribution et l\u2019\u00e9volution de centaines de millions de galaxies, Roman permettra aux chercheurs de mesurer beaucoup plus pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment l\u2019histoire de l\u2019expansion cosmique.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2375\" data-end=\"2667\">Le t\u00e9lescope \u00e9tudiera \u00e9galement la <strong data-start=\"2410\" data-end=\"2427\">mati\u00e8re noire<\/strong>, cette mati\u00e8re invisible qui ne semble pas interagir avec la lumi\u00e8re mais dont les effets gravitationnels jouent un r\u00f4le essentiel dans la formation des galaxies et des grandes structures de l\u2019Univers.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"12kcee\" data-start=\"2669\" data-end=\"2737\">Des milliers de nouvelles exoplan\u00e8tes pourraient \u00eatre d\u00e9couvertes<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2739\" data-end=\"2857\">Roman aura \u00e9galement pour mission de r\u00e9aliser un v\u00e9ritable <strong data-start=\"2798\" data-end=\"2856\">recensement des syst\u00e8mes plan\u00e9taires de la Voie lact\u00e9e<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2859\" data-end=\"3240\">L&rsquo;observatoire utilisera notamment une technique appel\u00e9e <strong data-start=\"2916\" data-end=\"2950\">microlentille gravitationnelle<\/strong>. Lorsqu\u2019une \u00e9toile passe devant une autre vue depuis la Terre, sa gravit\u00e9 peut bri\u00e8vement amplifier la lumi\u00e8re de l\u2019\u00e9toile situ\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019arri\u00e8re-plan. Si une plan\u00e8te orbite autour de l\u2019\u00e9toile au premier plan, elle peut provoquer une petite perturbation suppl\u00e9mentaire dans ce signal lumineux.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3242\" data-end=\"3363\">Cette m\u00e9thode permet de d\u00e9tecter des mondes qui seraient extr\u00eamement difficiles \u00e0 rep\u00e9rer avec les techniques classiques.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3365\" data-end=\"3558\">La NASA esp\u00e8re ainsi d\u00e9couvrir <strong data-start=\"3396\" data-end=\"3426\">des milliers d\u2019exoplan\u00e8tes<\/strong>, ce qui permettra de mieux comprendre la diversit\u00e9 des syst\u00e8mes plan\u00e9taires de notre galaxie.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3560\" data-end=\"3919\">Roman embarque \u00e9galement un <strong data-start=\"3588\" data-end=\"3617\">coronographe exp\u00e9rimental<\/strong>, capable de bloquer la lumi\u00e8re tr\u00e8s intense d\u2019une \u00e9toile afin d\u2019observer plus facilement les objets tr\u00e8s faibles situ\u00e9s autour d\u2019elle, notamment certaines plan\u00e8tes. Cette technologie pourrait pr\u00e9parer une future g\u00e9n\u00e9ration de t\u00e9lescopes capables d\u2019imager directement des mondes similaires \u00e0 la Terre.<\/p>\n<figure destination situ\u00e9e \u00e0 1,6 million de kilom\u00e8tres de la Terre<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3988\" data-end=\"4050\">Apr\u00e8s son lancement, Roman ne restera pas en orbite terrestre.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4052\" data-end=\"4208\">Le t\u00e9lescope prendra la direction du <strong data-start=\"4089\" data-end=\"4137\">point de Lagrange L2 du syst\u00e8me Soleil-Terre<\/strong>, situ\u00e9 \u00e0 environ <strong data-start=\"4155\" data-end=\"4207\">1,5 \u00e0 1,6 million de kilom\u00e8tres de notre plan\u00e8te<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4210\" data-end=\"4388\">Cette r\u00e9gion de l\u2019espace est particuli\u00e8rement int\u00e9ressante pour les grands observatoires astronomiques car elle offre des conditions thermiques et orbitales relativement stables.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4390\" data-end=\"4494\">Le James Webb Space Telescope ainsi que plusieurs autres observatoires travaillent d\u00e9j\u00e0 dans cette zone.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4496\" data-end=\"4550\">Le voyage de Roman vers L2 prendra plusieurs semaines.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"53tpb3\" data-start=\"4552\" data-end=\"4596\">Quand verrons-nous les premi\u00e8res images ?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4598\" data-end=\"4647\">Il faudra toutefois patienter apr\u00e8s le lancement.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4649\" data-end=\"4815\">Durant environ <strong data-start=\"4664\" data-end=\"4678\">trois mois<\/strong>, les \u00e9quipes de la NASA proc\u00e9deront au d\u00e9ploiement, \u00e0 l\u2019activation, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9talonnage et aux tests des diff\u00e9rents instruments du t\u00e9lescope.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4817\" data-end=\"5009\">Il s\u2019agit d\u2019une phase critique : les ing\u00e9nieurs devront v\u00e9rifier que les syst\u00e8mes optiques, \u00e9lectroniques et thermiques fonctionnent correctement avant le d\u00e9but des observations scientifiques.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5011\" data-end=\"5162\">La NASA pr\u00e9voit actuellement de publier les <strong data-start=\"5055\" data-end=\"5123\">premi\u00e8res images scientifiques de Roman au d\u00e9but de l\u2019ann\u00e9e 2027<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5164\" data-end=\"5346\">La comparaison avec James Webb est int\u00e9ressante : JWST avait d\u00e9coll\u00e9 en d\u00e9cembre 2021 et ses premi\u00e8res grandes images scientifiques avaient \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9voil\u00e9es environ sept mois plus tard.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5348\" data-end=\"5418\">Roman pourrait donc devenir op\u00e9rationnel sensiblement plus rapidement.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1j1s0u7\" data-start=\"5420\" data-end=\"5458\">Un v\u00e9ritable \u00ab Hubble grand angle \u00bb<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"5460\" data-end=\"5549\">Roman ne remplacera ni Hubble ni James Webb. Les trois t\u00e9lescopes seront compl\u00e9mentaires.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5551\" data-end=\"5828\">James Webb excelle dans l\u2019\u00e9tude extr\u00eamement d\u00e9taill\u00e9e de petites portions du ciel et dans l\u2019observation de galaxies tr\u00e8s lointaines. (Cr\u00e9dit photo : NASA\/Jolearra Tshiteya)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1yfz64p\" data-start=\"6323\" data-end=\"6367\">Une mission pr\u00e9vue pour au moins cinq ans<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"6369\" data-end=\"6531\">La mission scientifique principale est pr\u00e9vue pour durer environ <strong data-start=\"6434\" data-end=\"6446\">cinq ans<\/strong>, mais les ing\u00e9nieurs esp\u00e8rent que Roman pourra rester actif beaucoup plus longtemps.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6533\" data-end=\"6737\">L\u2019exp\u00e9rience de Hubble montre en effet que les grands observatoires spatiaux peuvent largement d\u00e9passer leur dur\u00e9e de vie initialement pr\u00e9vue lorsque leurs syst\u00e8mes continuent de fonctionner correctement.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6739\" data-end=\"6818\">Roman pourrait donc observer le ciel pendant une dizaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es ou davantage.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6820\" data-end=\"7101\">Autre particularit\u00e9 importante : la NASA pr\u00e9voit que les donn\u00e9es provenant des grands relev\u00e9s de Roman soient <strong data-start=\"6930\" data-end=\"6984\">rendues publiques rapidement apr\u00e8s leur traitement<\/strong>, sans longue p\u00e9riode r\u00e9serv\u00e9e exclusivement \u00e0 certaines \u00e9quipes scientifiques.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7103\" data-end=\"7228\">Cela pourrait permettre \u00e0 des milliers de chercheurs du monde entier d\u2019exploiter simultan\u00e9ment les observations du t\u00e9lescope.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"r3wdao\" data-start=\"7230\" data-end=\"7267\">Une nouvelle \u00e8re pour l\u2019astronomie<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"7269\" data-end=\"7396\">Avec Roman, James Webb, Euclid et l\u2019observatoire Vera C.
