Ces v\u00e9ritables \u00ab rivi\u00e8res a\u00e9riennes \u00bb, parfois appel\u00e9es \u00ab rivi\u00e8res volantes \u00bb, jouent un r\u00f4le fondamental dans l\u2019approvisionnement en eau de nombreuses r\u00e9gions du monde.<\/p>\n<p>Elles ne doivent pas \u00eatre confondues avec les rivi\u00e8res atmosph\u00e9riques classiques, qui correspondent g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement \u00e0 des ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes m\u00e9t\u00e9orologiques plus ponctuels et de courte dur\u00e9e. Les rivi\u00e8res a\u00e9riennes d\u00e9crites dans cette \u00e9tude sont au contraire des syst\u00e8mes relativement persistants, r\u00e9sultant de la combinaison des vents, des brises marines, des courants de basse altitude et d&rsquo;autres m\u00e9canismes atmosph\u00e9riques.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Des chercheurs ont utilis\u00e9 des donn\u00e9es climatiques d\u2019observation ainsi que des mod\u00e8les math\u00e9matiques pour reconstruire ces r\u00e9seaux au-dessus de l\u2019Am\u00e9rique du Sud. Ils ont notamment identifi\u00e9 les r\u00e9gions situ\u00e9es en amont qui fournissent l\u2019essentiel de l\u2019humidit\u00e9 atmosph\u00e9rique.<\/p>\n<p>Cette eau provient de plusieurs sources : l\u2019\u00e9vaporation des oc\u00e9ans et des sols, mais aussi de la transpiration des v\u00e9g\u00e9taux. Il s\u2019agit en quelque sorte des \u00ab sources \u00bb du syst\u00e8me atmosph\u00e9rique continental.<\/p>\n<p>G2 repr\u00e9sente des zones de transit o\u00f9 une partie de la vapeur d\u2019eau peut progressivement \u00eatre perdue sous forme de pr\u00e9cipitations au fur et \u00e0 mesure que les masses d\u2019air progressent vers l\u2019int\u00e9rieur des terres.<\/p>\n<p>G3 correspond aux r\u00e9gions o\u00f9 les rivi\u00e8res a\u00e9riennes ralentissent fortement et o\u00f9 leur teneur en humidit\u00e9 a d\u00e9j\u00e0 consid\u00e9rablement diminu\u00e9. Ces zones d\u00e9pendent davantage de l\u2019\u00e9vaporation et de la v\u00e9g\u00e9tation continentales pour recevoir des pr\u00e9cipitations.<\/p>\n<p>Enfin, G4 repr\u00e9sente les zones situ\u00e9es tr\u00e8s loin en aval des principaux flux. Comm. , 2026)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>L&rsquo;Amazonie agit comme une immense pompe \u00e0 humidit\u00e9<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cette nouvelle cartographie met notamment en \u00e9vidence l\u2019importance des grands bassins de l\u2019Amazonie et du R\u00edo de la Plata.<\/p>\n<p>La for\u00eat amazonienne recycle une quantit\u00e9 consid\u00e9rable d\u2019eau : les arbres absorbent l\u2019eau du sol puis en rejettent une partie dans l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re par \u00e9vapotranspiration. Cette humidit\u00e9 peut ensuite \u00eatre emport\u00e9e par les vents vers d\u2019autres r\u00e9gions du continent.<\/p>\n<p>La cons\u00e9quence est majeure : modifier les for\u00eats situ\u00e9es dans les r\u00e9gions alimentant ces rivi\u00e8res a\u00e9riennes peut modifier les pr\u00e9cipitations parfois tr\u00e8s loin du lieu o\u00f9 se produit la d\u00e9forestation.<\/p>\n<p>Les chercheurs citent notamment le cas de la r\u00e9gion d\u2019Ucayali, au P\u00e9rou. Comm.&nbsp;, 2026)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Pr\u00e9server les for\u00eats devient aussi une question de gestion de l&rsquo;eau<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pour les chercheurs, la protection des for\u00eats et le reboisement constituent donc des moyens importants de pr\u00e9server ces circuits atmosph\u00e9riques.<\/p>\n<p>Une for\u00eat situ\u00e9e \u00e0 plusieurs centaines ou milliers de kilom\u00e8tres d\u2019une ville ou d\u2019une r\u00e9gion agricole peut en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 contribuer indirectement \u00e0 ses pr\u00e9cipitations.<\/p>\n<p>Cela signifie \u00e9galement que la gestion de l\u2019eau ne peut plus \u00eatre pens\u00e9e uniquement \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9chelle des rivi\u00e8res et des bassins hydrographiques visibles au sol.<\/p>\n<p>Les bassins atmosph\u00e9riques traversent les fronti\u00e8res administratives et parfois m\u00eame les limites des bassins hydrologiques traditionnels.
