L\u2019expression est imparfaite, mais elle rappelle une r\u00e9alit\u00e9 essentielle : gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la photosynth\u00e8se, les arbres pr\u00e9l\u00e8vent du dioxyde de carbone dans l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re et en stockent une partie dans leur bois, leurs racines et les sols.<\/p>\n<p>Cependant, cette capacit\u00e9 d\u2019absorption n\u2019est ni permanente ni garantie. Lors des \u00e9pisodes El Ni\u00f1o les plus chauds et les plus secs, certaines for\u00eats tropicales d\u2019Am\u00e9rique du Sud peuvent pratiquement cesser de jouer leur r\u00f4le de puits de carbone. Certaines de ces parcelles \u00e9taient suivies depuis plus de trente ans.<\/p>\n<p>Leur conclusion est pr\u00e9occupante : au cours de cet El Ni\u00f1o exceptionnellement chaud, l\u2019absorption habituelle de carbone par la croissance des arbres a fortement diminu\u00e9. Dans le m\u00eame temps, la mortalit\u00e9 des arbres a augment\u00e9. \u00c0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle des for\u00eats \u00e9tudi\u00e9es, ces deux ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes ont temporairement neutralis\u00e9 le puits de carbone forestier.<\/p>\n<p>Cela ne signifie pas que l\u2019ensemble de l\u2019Amazonie devient syst\u00e9matiquement une source de carbone \u00e0 chaque El Ni\u00f1o. Le ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne varie fortement selon les r\u00e9gions, l\u2019intensit\u00e9 de la s\u00e9cheresse, la temp\u00e9rature, l\u2019\u00e9tat de conservation des for\u00eats et la pr\u00e9sence d\u2019activit\u00e9s humaines. Mais les r\u00e9sultats montrent que le r\u00f4le protecteur de la for\u00eat peut s\u2019affaiblir brutalement lors d\u2019une anomalie climatique majeure.<\/p>\n<h2>Pourquoi la chaleur et la s\u00e9cheresse perturbent-elles les arbres ?<\/h2>\n<p>Pour absorber du CO\u2082, les arbres ouvrent de minuscules pores situ\u00e9s sur leurs feuilles, appel\u00e9s stomates. Ces ouvertures permettent les \u00e9changes gazeux n\u00e9cessaires \u00e0 la photosynth\u00e8se, mais elles entra\u00eenent \u00e9galement une perte d\u2019eau.<\/p>\n<p>Lorsque l\u2019air devient trop chaud et trop sec, les arbres ferment partiellement leurs stomates afin de limiter la d\u00e9shydratation. Ils absorbent alors moins de dioxyde de carbone et leur croissance ralentit.<\/p>\n<p>Si la s\u00e9cheresse se prolonge, la tension dans les conduits internes qui transportent l\u2019eau peut devenir trop forte. La circulation de la s\u00e8ve se rompt alors dans certaines parties de l\u2019arbre : c\u2019est ce que les scientifiques appellent une d\u00e9faillance hydraulique.<\/p>\n<p>Durant l\u2019\u00e9pisode El Ni\u00f1o de 2015-2016, la mortalit\u00e9 annuelle des arbres \u00e9tudi\u00e9s est pass\u00e9e d\u2019environ 1,8 % \u00e0 pr\u00e8s de 3 %. Les arbres de grande taille, qui stockent une part importante du carbone forestier, ont \u00e9t\u00e9 particuli\u00e8rement touch\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>Lorsqu\u2019un grand arbre meurt, il ne cesse pas seulement d\u2019absorber du CO\u2082. Les r\u00e9gions centrales, g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement plus humides, peuvent mieux r\u00e9sister \u00e0 une s\u00e9cheresse passag\u00e8re. En revanche, les for\u00eats situ\u00e9es au sud et \u00e0 l\u2019est du bassin amazonien vivent d\u00e9j\u00e0 dans des conditions plus chaudes et plus saisonni\u00e8res.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019\u00e9tude de 2023 montre que ces for\u00eats p\u00e9riph\u00e9riques sont particuli\u00e8rement vuln\u00e9rables. Une augmentation moyenne de seulement 0,5 \u00b0C pendant l\u2019\u00e9pisode \u00e9tudi\u00e9 a \u00e9t\u00e9 associ\u00e9e \u00e0 une perte d\u2019environ 0,5 % du carbone contenu dans leur biomasse a\u00e9rienne.<\/p>\n<p>Or ces zones sont \u00e9galement parmi les plus touch\u00e9es par la d\u00e9forestation, les incendies, l\u2019exploitation foresti\u00e8re et la fragmentation des paysages. La chaleur li\u00e9e \u00e0 El Ni\u00f1o vient donc souvent s\u2019ajouter \u00e0 des d\u00e9g\u00e2ts d\u00e9j\u00e0 provoqu\u00e9s par les activit\u00e9s humaines.<\/p>\n<h2>La d\u00e9forestation amplifie les effets d\u2019El Ni\u00f1o<\/h2>\n<p>Une \u00e9tude publi\u00e9e en 2025 dans <em>Nature Communications<\/em> montre que l\u2019Amazonie a perdu environ 0,37 milliard de tonnes de carbone dans sa biomasse a\u00e9rienne entre 2010 et 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Les gains enregistr\u00e9s dans certaines for\u00eats intactes et dans les for\u00eats secondaires n\u2019ont pas suffi \u00e0 compenser les pertes caus\u00e9es par la d\u00e9forestation, la d\u00e9gradation foresti\u00e8re et les transformations agricoles. Pendant les ann\u00e9es marqu\u00e9es par El Ni\u00f1o, les territoires influenc\u00e9s par les activit\u00e9s humaines ont repr\u00e9sent\u00e9 environ 60 % des pertes brutes de carbone observ\u00e9es.<\/p>\n<p>La for\u00eat d\u00e9grad\u00e9e r\u00e9siste en effet beaucoup moins bien aux s\u00e9cheresses. Les ouvertures cr\u00e9\u00e9es par l\u2019abattage des arbres laissent entrer davantage de lumi\u00e8re et de chaleur. La d\u00e9forestation locale contribue \u00e9galement \u00e0 r\u00e9duire les pr\u00e9cipitations, car une partie importante de l\u2019humidit\u00e9 amazonienne est recycl\u00e9e par la v\u00e9g\u00e9tation elle-m\u00eame.<\/p>\n<p>Moins d\u2019arbres signifie donc moins d\u2019\u00e9vapotranspiration, moins de vapeur d\u2019eau dans l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re et, potentiellement, une saison s\u00e8che plus longue. Le 9 juillet 2026, la NOAA estimait que le ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne allait continuer \u00e0 se renforcer jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la fin de l\u2019ann\u00e9e, avec une probabilit\u00e9 de 97 % qu\u2019il persiste jusqu\u2019au d\u00e9but du printemps 2027 dans l\u2019h\u00e9misph\u00e8re Nord.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019Organisation m\u00e9t\u00e9orologique mondiale pr\u00e9voit \u00e9galement un \u00e9pisode au moins mod\u00e9r\u00e9, potentiellement fort, susceptible d\u2019accro\u00eetre les risques de chaleur extr\u00eame, de s\u00e9cheresse et d\u2019incendies dans plusieurs r\u00e9gions tropicales.<\/p>\n<p>Il est toutefois encore impossible de d\u00e9terminer pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment l\u2019intensit\u00e9 de la s\u00e9cheresse qui touchera l\u2019ensemble du bassin amazonien. Les cons\u00e9quences d\u2019El Ni\u00f1o d\u00e9pendent aussi de la temp\u00e9rature de l\u2019Atlantique tropical, de la r\u00e9partition r\u00e9gionale des pluies et de l\u2019\u00e9tat pr\u00e9alable de la v\u00e9g\u00e9tation.<\/p>\n<p>La situation est n\u00e9anmoins pr\u00e9occupante, car certaines zones amazoniennes n\u2019ont pas encore totalement r\u00e9cup\u00e9r\u00e9 des s\u00e9cheresses et des incendies des ann\u00e9es pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes.<\/p>\n<h2>Un risque de r\u00e9troaction climatique<\/h2>\n<p>Les for\u00eats et les sols absorbent chaque ann\u00e9e une part importante du CO\u2082 \u00e9mis par les activit\u00e9s humaines. Cette absorption naturelle ralentit l\u2019augmentation de la concentration des gaz \u00e0 effet de serre dans l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<p>Si les for\u00eats tropicales absorbent moins de carbone, une plus grande fraction de nos \u00e9missions reste dans l\u2019air. Le r\u00e9chauffement s\u2019accentue alors, ce qui augmente \u00e0 son tour le risque de s\u00e9cheresses, d\u2019incendies et de mortalit\u00e9 des arbres.<\/p>\n<p>C\u2019est ce que l\u2019on appelle une r\u00e9troaction positive : le r\u00e9chauffement affaiblit les puits de carbone, et l\u2019affaiblissement des puits de carbone acc\u00e9l\u00e8re le r\u00e9chauffement.<\/p>\n<p>Pendant l\u2019\u00e9pisode El Ni\u00f1o de 2023-2024, les tropiques ont repr\u00e9sent\u00e9 l\u2019essentiel de l\u2019anomalie mondiale du puits de carbone terrestre.
