Ces fronti\u00e8res instables permettent au magma de remonter vers la surface, formant ainsi des volcans sur le fond oc\u00e9anique.<\/p>\n<p>La majeure partie de cette activit\u00e9 volcanique sous-marine consiste en des \u00e9ruptions basaltiques relativement douces le long des dorsales oc\u00e9aniques \u2013 mais de temps en temps, les choses deviennent un peu plus spectaculaires.<\/p>\n<p>Les caldeiras sous-marines peuvent g\u00e9n\u00e9rer d&rsquo;\u00e9normes \u00e9ruptions, des tsunamis, des ondes de choc, des panaches de cendres et d&rsquo;\u00e9normes quantit\u00e9s de vapeur lorsqu&rsquo;elles explosent profond\u00e9ment sous l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019 \u00e9v\u00e9nement Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha\u02bbapai de 2022 , une \u00e9ruption explosive d\u2019une caldeira sous-marine dans l\u2019archipel tongien, a servi d\u2019avertissement. Il a produit des ondes de pression atmosph\u00e9rique qui ont atteint l\u2019espace, des tsunamis de grande ampleur et des d\u00e9g\u00e2ts \u00e0 des milliers de kilom\u00e8tres de distance .<\/p>\n<p>Si nous ignorons l&#8217;emplacement des caldeiras sous-marines, nous ne pouvons d\u00e9terminer lesquelles m\u00e9ritent une surveillance accrue. Or, avant cette \u00e9tude, moins de 30 avaient \u00e9t\u00e9 recens\u00e9es sous les oc\u00e9ans.<\/p>\n<p>Pour combler cette lacune dans nos connaissances, Verolino et ses coll\u00e8gues ont adapt\u00e9 un algorithme initialement con\u00e7u pour d\u00e9tecter les crat\u00e8res d&rsquo;impact sur Mars et l&rsquo;ont appliqu\u00e9 aux cartes bathym\u00e9triques \u2013 celles qui enregistrent la topographie du fond marin.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xAYEndrV8zc?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=fr-FR&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;algorithme a initialement identifi\u00e9 87 435 formations possibles.<\/p>\n<p>La plupart de ces alertes \u00e9taient de fausses alertes. En appliquant une s\u00e9rie de filtres, puis en inspectant manuellement les candidats restants, les chercheurs ont r\u00e9duit leur liste finale \u00e0 78 caldeiras probables.<\/p>\n<p>Cinq des candidats \u00e9taient d\u00e9j\u00e0 reconnus comme des caldeiras sous-marines, ce qui permet de croire que la m\u00e9thode peut identifier avec succ\u00e8s des exemples r\u00e9els.<\/p>\n<p>Cela signifie que les chercheurs ont d\u00e9couvert 73 caldeiras potentielles jusqu&rsquo;alors inconnues.
