L&rsquo;\u00e9tude de cet impact ancien apporte un \u00e9clairage nouveau sur le fonctionnement du syst\u00e8me solaire \u00e0 ses d\u00e9buts, \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s au m\u00eame moment o\u00f9 la vie est apparue sur Terre.<\/p>\n<p>Dans cette nouvelle \u00e9tude, des scientifiques ont examin\u00e9 une m\u00e9t\u00e9orite lunaire d\u00e9couverte en Afrique du Nord-Ouest. Il est essentiel de comprendre comment la vie s&rsquo;est implant\u00e9e\u2026 La fr\u00e9quence de ces \u00e9v\u00e9nements catastrophiques est un \u00e9l\u00e9ment important de l&rsquo;\u00e9quation. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Dans cette \u00e9tude, les scientifiques ont utilis\u00e9 la datation radiom\u00e9trique sur la m\u00e9t\u00e9orite. Cette m\u00e9thode permet de d\u00e9terminer le taux de d\u00e9sint\u00e9gration des mat\u00e9riaux radioactifs pr\u00e9sents dans l&rsquo;\u00e9chantillon, ce qui a permis \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9quipe d&rsquo;estimer que le premier impact a eu lieu il y a 3,5 milliards d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es, soit environ un milliard d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es apr\u00e8s la formation du syst\u00e8me solaire.<\/p>\n<p>La m\u00e9t\u00e9orite contenait de l&rsquo;oxyde de zirconium cubique, connu sur Terre pour sa ressemblance avec le diamant. Mais dans cette m\u00e9t\u00e9orite ancienne, ce mat\u00e9riau r\u00e9v\u00e8le une autre histoire : la surface lunaire a fondu sous l&rsquo;effet de l&rsquo;impact, car l&rsquo;oxyde de zirconium cubique ne se forme qu&rsquo;\u00e0 des temp\u00e9ratures extr\u00eamement \u00e9lev\u00e9es. Bien que ce mat\u00e9riau se dissipe aux temp\u00e9ratures glaciales qui r\u00e8gnent sur la Lune, les scientifiques ont d\u00e9tect\u00e9 sa pr\u00e9sence gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 des traces de ses produits de recristallisation.<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;impact s&rsquo;est produit \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s en m\u00eame temps que d&rsquo;autres impacts majeurs, sur Terre et sur un tr\u00e8s gros ast\u00e9ro\u00efde nomm\u00e9 Vesta , identifi\u00e9s par des recherches ind\u00e9pendantes.
