Leurs \u00e9ruptions peuvent cr\u00e9er certaines des terres agricoles les plus fertiles de la plan\u00e8te , former de nouvelles terres et contribuer au cycle des substances chimiques entre l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re et la cro\u00fbte terrestres.<\/p>\n<p>Des scientifiques ont observ\u00e9 un ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne volcanique in\u00e9dit qui pourrait aider les chercheurs \u00e0 mieux comprendre la chimie atmosph\u00e9rique, voire \u00e0 orienter les futurs efforts de d\u00e9pollution de l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xAYEndrV8zc?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=fr-FR&#038;autohide=2&#038;start=1&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Lors de l&rsquo;\u00e9ruption explosive du Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha&rsquo;apai en 2022 dans le Pacifique Sud, des satellites ont d\u00e9tect\u00e9 du formald\u00e9hyde, preuve qu&rsquo;une partie du m\u00e9thane lib\u00e9r\u00e9 par le volcan a \u00e9t\u00e9 rapidement d\u00e9truite dans son immense panache de cendres et de gaz.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab On sait que les volcans \u00e9mettent du m\u00e9thane lors de leurs \u00e9ruptions, mais jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent, on ignorait que les cendres volcaniques \u00e9taient \u00e9galement capables de d\u00e9polluer partiellement l&rsquo;environnement \u00bb, explique Maarten van Herpen, climatologue chez Acacia Impact Innovation BV aux Pays-Bas et premier auteur de la nouvelle \u00e9tude.<\/p>\n<p>Le m\u00e9thane est naturellement pr\u00e9sent en permanence dans l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re. ( Observatoire de la Terre de la NASA )<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Cependant, une trop grande quantit\u00e9 de m\u00e9thane exacerbe l&rsquo;effet de serre, pi\u00e9geant la chaleur et r\u00e9chauffant la plan\u00e8te \u00e0 des niveaux insoutenables.<\/p>\n<p>De nombreuses activit\u00e9s humaines produisent du m\u00e9thane , et les scientifiques recherchent des moyens de r\u00e9duire ces niveaux.<\/p>\n<p>Une m\u00e9thode pour d\u00e9composer rapidement le m\u00e9thane consiste \u00e0 introduire un peu de chlore . Le chlore est r\u00e9actif car il poss\u00e8de un \u00e9lectron non appari\u00e9 qui cherche \u00e0 se lier \u00e0 autre chose.<\/p>\n<p>Lorsque le chlore se lie au m\u00e9thane, cet \u00e9lectron capte un atome d&rsquo;hydrog\u00e8ne, amor\u00e7ant une r\u00e9action en cha\u00eene qui d\u00e9compose finalement le m\u00e9thane en d&rsquo;autres compos\u00e9s. Les chercheurs ont estim\u00e9 qu&rsquo;environ 900 tonnes m\u00e9triques (992 tonnes am\u00e9ricaines) de m\u00e9thane volcanique \u00e9taient d\u00e9truites chaque jour par oxydation au chlore, contre une production totale de m\u00e9thane estim\u00e9e \u00e0 330 kilotonnes.<\/p>\n<p>Le volcan \u00e9tait donc loin d&rsquo;avoir nettoy\u00e9 ses propres d\u00e9g\u00e2ts.<\/p>\n<p>Cette recherche d\u00e9montre que l&rsquo;\u00e9limination du m\u00e9thane atmosph\u00e9rique peut \u00eatre observ\u00e9e et quantifi\u00e9e, m\u00eame si elle n\u00e9cessite des \u00e9v\u00e9nements exceptionnels.
