Une faille active a atteint un seuil critique et se rompra bient\u00f4t, donnant naissance \u00e0 un nouvel oc\u00e9an.<\/p>\n<p>Cela dit, \u00ab bient\u00f4t \u00bb est un terme relatif \u2013 il faudra encore quelques millions d\u2019ann\u00e9es, mais c\u2019est un clin d\u2019\u0153il \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle g\u00e9ologique .<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab Nous avons constat\u00e9 que le rifting dans cette zone est plus avanc\u00e9 et que la cro\u00fbte est plus mince que ce que l&rsquo;on pensait \u00bb, explique Christian Rowan, g\u00e9oscientifique \u00e0 l&rsquo;universit\u00e9 Columbia.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab L\u2019Afrique de l\u2019Est a progress\u00e9 davantage dans le processus de rifting qu\u2019on ne le pensait auparavant. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Ce qui est le plus fascinant dans cette d\u00e9couverte, ce sont ses implications pour notre propre histoire. Commun. , 2026)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>La configuration actuelle des continents terrestres nous semble constante, mais ils sont en perp\u00e9tuel mouvement \u2013 \u200b\u200bbien qu&rsquo;extr\u00eamement lent.<\/p>\n<p>Il y a plus de 200 millions d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es, ils \u00e9taient tous comprim\u00e9s en un seul supercontinent, et on pr\u00e9voit que dans un avenir lointain, ils finiront (pour la plupart) par se r\u00e9unir \u00e0 nouveau .<\/p>\n<p>L\u00e0 o\u00f9 deux plaques tectoniques se rencontrent, des montagnes se forment. L\u00e0 o\u00f9 elles s&rsquo;\u00e9cartent, des oc\u00e9ans naissent.<\/p>\n<p>Le syst\u00e8me de rift est-africain en est un exemple flagrant. La plaque africaine se divise actuellement en deux : l\u2019immense plaque nubienne \u00e0 l\u2019ouest, qui englobe la majeure partie du continent ; et la plus petite plaque somalienne, qui comprend une grande partie de la c\u00f4te est et l\u2019\u00eele de Madagascar.<\/p>\n<p>Pour cette nouvelle \u00e9tude, les scientifiques se sont concentr\u00e9s sur une partie sp\u00e9cifique de ce syst\u00e8me : le rift de Turkana, qui s\u2019\u00e9tend sur des centaines de kilom\u00e8tres \u00e0 travers le Kenya et l\u2019\u00c9thiopie. L\u2019\u00e9quipe a analys\u00e9 des mesures sismiques pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment effectu\u00e9es dans la r\u00e9gion et a calcul\u00e9 l\u2019\u00e9paisseur de la cro\u00fbte terrestre \u00e0 cet endroit.<\/p>\n<p>Il s&rsquo;av\u00e8re que sa cro\u00fbte est beaucoup plus mince que pr\u00e9vu : seulement 13 kilom\u00e8tres d&rsquo;\u00e9paisseur environ au centre du rift. \u00c0 titre de comparaison, son \u00e9paisseur d\u00e9passe 35 kilom\u00e8tres sur les bords de la zone de rift.<\/p><div class=\"1665f18d14f35dd9e7566e1a8ac9a3e9\" data-index=\"2\" style=\"float: none; margin:10px 0 10px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n     data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2860849627502538\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"3019501113\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>Et lorsque la cro\u00fbte dans une zone de rift devient plus mince qu&rsquo;environ 15 kilom\u00e8tres, cela signifie qu&rsquo;elle est entr\u00e9e dans une phase appel\u00e9e \u00ab r\u00e9tr\u00e9cissement \u00bb. Une fois ce point atteint, une rupture continentale est quasiment in\u00e9vitable.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab Plus la cro\u00fbte s&rsquo;amincit, plus elle devient fragile, ce qui contribue \u00e0 favoriser la poursuite du rifting \u00bb, explique Rowan.<\/p>\n<p>Dans quelques millions d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es, cette phase s&rsquo;ach\u00e8vera et la suivante entrera en jeu : l&rsquo;oc\u00e9anisation. Comme son nom l&rsquo;indique, c&rsquo;est ainsi qu&rsquo;un nouvel oc\u00e9an se forme.<\/p>\n<p>La cro\u00fbte terrestre s&rsquo;amincira tellement que du magma jaillira des profondeurs, s&rsquo;accumulera et se refroidira pour former un bassin.
