( Giorgostr\/Wikimedia Commons )<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ces travaux apportent des preuves suppl\u00e9mentaires que la qui\u00e9tude peut s&rsquo;av\u00e9rer mortelle \u2013 une id\u00e9e qui s&rsquo;est tragiquement r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9e dans les nombreux \u00e9tablissements humains d\u00e9truits par les cendres, la lave et les gaz toxiques lib\u00e9r\u00e9s par des volcans endormis mais dangereux.<\/p>\n<p>Le volcan Methana, toujours actif, a connu plus de 31 \u00e9ruptions, dont trois explosives, au cours des centaines de milliers d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es \u00e9coul\u00e9es. Bien que sa chronologie soit mal connue, la plus r\u00e9cente remonte \u00e0 environ 2 250 ans et a \u00e9t\u00e9 consign\u00e9e par l&rsquo;historien grec Strabon .<\/p>\n<p>Pour remonter plus loin dans le temps g\u00e9ologique, les chercheurs ont analys\u00e9 des cristaux provenant d&rsquo;\u00e9chantillons de roche de Methana et ont calcul\u00e9 leur \u00e2ge en utilisant les taux de d\u00e9sint\u00e9gration radioactive d&rsquo;\u00e9l\u00e9ments tels que l&rsquo;uranium.<\/p>\n<p>Les minuscules cristaux de zircon sont particuli\u00e8rement instructifs. En effet, le pic de formation de zircon de Methana s&rsquo;est produit lors d&rsquo;une p\u00e9riode de calme exceptionnellement longue, qui a dur\u00e9 entre 280 000 et 170 000 ans environ.<\/p>\n<p>Curieusement, ce pic \u2013 un signal fort de production de magma, qui offre les conditions parfaites pour la formation du zircon \u2013 est apparu malgr\u00e9 l&rsquo;absence de signes de vie volcanique en surface.<\/p>\n<p>Ce paradoxe s&rsquo;explique par les forces g\u00e9ologiques qui ont fa\u00e7onn\u00e9 les racines du Methana. Sous le volcan, une plaque tectonique glisse sous une autre, dans un processus de sculpture de la Terre appel\u00e9 subduction .<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 l&rsquo;instar d&rsquo;un tapis roulant, la plaque coulissante transporte d&rsquo;importantes quantit\u00e9s de s\u00e9diments marins et d&rsquo;eau vers l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur de la Terre. Cette eau hydrate le manteau, stimulant ainsi la production de magma.<\/p>\n<p>Mais la saturation en eau d\u00e9clenche \u00e9galement la cristallisation du magma, le rendant plus \u00e9pais et plus immobile.
