Un v\u00e9hicule destin\u00e9 \u00e0 faire atterrir des vaisseaux sans encombre sur la plan\u00e8te Mars.<\/p>\n<p>Retour \u00e0 l&rsquo;envoyeur ! Dans l\u2019imaginaire collectif, la soucoupe volante est le vaisseau par excellence empreint\u00e9 par les extra-terrestres pour d\u00e9barquer sur Terre. Cette forme de disque est cependant sur le point de d\u00e9boucher sur une v\u00e9ritable application.<\/p>\n<p>La NASA a mis au point le Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator (LDSD), un d\u00e9c\u00e9l\u00e9rateur supersonique de rentr\u00e9e en atmosph\u00e8re de faible densit\u00e9, qui ressemble \u00e9trangement \u00e0 une soucoupe volante, comme on peut le voir dans la vid\u00e9o ci-dessous.<\/p>\n<p>Ce v\u00e9hicule de 4,5 m\u00e8tres de large et qui p\u00e8se 2,6 tonnes a \u00e9t\u00e9 con\u00e7u pour faire atterir des vaisseaux lourds sur Mars sans qu&rsquo;ils ne s&rsquo;\u00e9crasent. Une vrai gageure : \u00e0 cause de la densit\u00e9 tr\u00e8s faible de l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re qui r\u00e8gne sur la plan\u00e8te rouge, seuls des engins de moins d&rsquo;une tonne sont parvenus jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 maintenant \u00e0 bon port. Encore \u00e9taient-ils dot\u00e9s de multiples dispositifs de descente pour freiner leur arriv\u00e9e.<\/p><div class=\"1665f18d14f35dd9e7566e1a8ac9a3e9\" data-index=\"2\" style=\"float: none; margin:10px 0 10px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n     data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2860849627502538\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"3019501113\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>Le LDSD a \u00e9t\u00e9 test\u00e9 une derni\u00e8re fois en laboratoire ce 31 mars en Californie \u00e0 Pasadena, au si\u00e8ge du Jet Propulsion Laboratory qui d\u00e9veloppe le projet. La prochaine \u00e9tape sera de l&rsquo;utiliser en grandeur nature au mois de juin prochain. Un ballon le soul\u00e8vera \u00e0 une altitude de 36 kilom\u00e8tres au-dessus de la surface de la Terre. Un propulseur d\u2019appoint prendra ensuite le relai pour l\u2019emmener \u00e0 une altitude de 55 kilom\u00e8tres et une vitesse de Mach 4, soit 4896 km\/h.<\/p>\n<p>Lorsqu&rsquo;il aura atteint les couches sup\u00e9rieures de la stratosph\u00e8re, dont l\u2019environnement correspond \u00e0 l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re t\u00e9nue qui r\u00e8gne sur Mars, la \u00ab soucoupe volante \u00bb effectuera alors une batterie de tests sur deux technologies r\u00e9volutionnaires, pr\u00e9cise la Nasa.<\/p>\n<p>Au d\u00e9but de sa chute, le LDSD activera, selon les propres termes de l&rsquo;agence spatiale am\u00e9ricaine, une sorte de donut gonflable g\u00e9ant qui sera d\u00e9ploy\u00e9 \u00e0 Mach 3,8 et freinera jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 Mach 2,5. Vitesse \u00e0 laquelle le plus grand parachute supersonique jamais con\u00e7u s&rsquo;ouvrira.
