Des bact\u00e9ries \u00ab extr\u00eamophiles \u00bb pourraient survivre \u00e0 des impacts d&rsquo;ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes suffisamment puissants pour les propulser dans l&rsquo;espace, ce qui sugg\u00e8re que la vie pourrait voyager entre les corps plan\u00e9taires.<\/p>\n<p>Des bact\u00e9ries \u00ab extr\u00eamophiles \u00bb pourraient survivre \u00e0 des impacts d&rsquo;ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes suffisamment puissants pour les propulser dans l&rsquo;espace, selon une nouvelle exp\u00e9rience en laboratoire \u2014 sugg\u00e9rant que ces collisions avec des roches spatiales pourraient diss\u00e9miner une \u00e9ventuelle vie extraterrestre entre les mondes.<\/p>\n<p>Dans cette nouvelle \u00e9tude, publi\u00e9e le 3 mars dans la revue PNAS Nexus , des chercheurs ont plac\u00e9 des bact\u00e9ries Deinococcus radiodurans , capables de survivre dans l&rsquo;espace pendant des ann\u00e9es, entre deux plaques d&rsquo;acier. Ils ont ensuite comprim\u00e9 ce \u00ab sandwich \u00bb tr\u00e8s fortement et rapidement pour simuler l&rsquo;impact d&rsquo;ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes sur une plan\u00e8te, et ont mesur\u00e9 le nombre de microbes ayant surv\u00e9cu.<\/p>\n<p>Les pressions utilis\u00e9es pour \u00e9craser les microbes ont \u00e9t\u00e9 choisies en fonction de celles n\u00e9cessaires pour que des ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes percutant Mars projettent des microbes et des fragments de la plan\u00e8te dans l&rsquo;espace. L&rsquo;\u00e9quipe a test\u00e9 des pressions allant de 1,4 \u00e0 2,9 gigapascals (GPa), soit environ 14 000 \u00e0 29 000 fois la pression atmosph\u00e9rique terrestre au niveau de la mer. Environ 60 % des microbes ont surv\u00e9cu \u00e0 un impact de 2,4 GPa, et jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 95 % ont surv\u00e9cu lorsque la pression a \u00e9t\u00e9 abaiss\u00e9e \u00e0 1,4 GPa.<\/p>\n<p>Dans la plupart des \u00e9tudes pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes ayant test\u00e9 de tels sc\u00e9narios, les taux de survie des microbes \u00e9taient nettement inf\u00e9rieurs. Les auteurs de l&rsquo;\u00e9tude ont \u00e9mis l&rsquo;hypoth\u00e8se que cela pourrait \u00eatre d\u00fb aux caract\u00e9ristiques diff\u00e9rentes des microbes test\u00e9s dans la nouvelle \u00e9tude : plus r\u00e9sistants, plus robustes et capables de supporter une exposition extr\u00eame aux radiations, la dessiccation (un dess\u00e8chement extr\u00eame) et les hautes temp\u00e9ratures.<\/p>\n<p>Une forme de vie extr\u00eame<br \/>\nLes chercheurs ont choisi de tester D. radiodurans car cette esp\u00e8ce peut survivre au froid et au vide spatial. Une \u00e9tude de 2020 a montr\u00e9 que D. radiodurans avait surv\u00e9cu \u00e0 une exposition \u00e0 l&rsquo;espace pendant trois ans, fix\u00e9e \u00e0 l&rsquo;ext\u00e9rieur de la Station spatiale internationale, un environnement hostile \u00e0 la vie. Ils ont constat\u00e9 qu&rsquo;apr\u00e8s avoir subi des impacts de haute pression (suffisamment violents pour endommager les membranes cellulaires), les microbes privil\u00e9giaient l&rsquo;expression des g\u00e8nes li\u00e9s \u00e0 la r\u00e9paration des dommages cellulaires plut\u00f4t qu&rsquo;\u00e0 la cr\u00e9ation de nouvelles cellules. Ils consommaient \u00e9galement davantage de fer et r\u00e9paraient leur ADN.<\/p>\n<p>Comprendre comment la vie peut voyager entre les corps plan\u00e9taires est essentiel pour les missions de retour d&rsquo;\u00e9chantillons, soulignent les auteurs de l&rsquo;\u00e9tude. Par exemple, les \u00e9chantillons rapport\u00e9s de Mars doivent subir des proc\u00e9dures rigoureuses afin d&#8217;emp\u00eacher que d&rsquo;\u00e9ventuels microbes martiens ne soient transport\u00e9s sur Terre et ne contaminent notre plan\u00e8te. Si les impacts d&rsquo;ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes pouvaient transporter des microbes ailleurs dans le syst\u00e8me solaire, les \u00e9chantillons rapport\u00e9s d&rsquo;autres endroits pourraient \u00e9galement n\u00e9cessiter des pr\u00e9cautions suppl\u00e9mentaires pour \u00e9viter toute contamination.<\/p>\n<p>Par ailleurs, l&rsquo;\u00e9tude montre que certaines formes de vie peuvent survivre \u00e0 une projection violente dans l&rsquo;espace.
