Un panache de d\u00e9bris et d&rsquo;eau s&rsquo;est \u00e9lev\u00e9 vers le ciel avant de retomber, d\u00e9clenchant un gigantesque tsunami.<\/p>\n<p>Ce sont les conclusions d&rsquo;une nouvelle \u00e9tude, dans laquelle les chercheurs tentent de r\u00e9gler un diff\u00e9rend vieux de plusieurs d\u00e9cennies sur les origines du crat\u00e8re de Silverpit, d\u00e9sormais enfoui \u00e0 700 m\u00e8tres sous le fond marin, \u00e0 environ 130 kilom\u00e8tres au large de la c\u00f4te sud-est de la Grande-Bretagne.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab Nos preuves montrent qu&rsquo;un ast\u00e9ro\u00efde de 160 m\u00e8tres de large a frapp\u00e9 le fond marin \u00e0 un angle faible depuis l&rsquo;ouest \u00bb, explique le premier auteur Uisdean Nicholson, g\u00e9oscientifique \u00e0 l&rsquo;Universit\u00e9 Heriot-Watt en \u00c9cosse.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab En quelques minutes, il a cr\u00e9\u00e9 un rideau de roche et d&rsquo;eau de 1,5 kilom\u00e8tre de haut qui s&rsquo;est ensuite effondr\u00e9 dans la mer, cr\u00e9ant un tsunami de plus de 100 m\u00e8tres de haut \u00bb, ajoute- t-il .<\/p>\n<p>D\u00e9couvert en 2002 gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 des donn\u00e9es sismiques 3D, le crat\u00e8re est au c\u0153ur d&rsquo;un d\u00e9bat scientifique de longue date sur sa formation. Selon des th\u00e9ories concurrentes, le crat\u00e8re pourrait s&rsquo;\u00eatre form\u00e9 par le bas, soit en raison de mouvements de sel souterrains , soit d&rsquo;une activit\u00e9 volcanique .<\/p>\n<p>Lorsque la question a \u00e9t\u00e9 soumise au vote lors d&rsquo;un d\u00e9bat g\u00e9ologique en 2009, les personnes pr\u00e9sentes ont vot\u00e9 massivement en faveur de l&rsquo;origine non c\u00e9leste, ce qui a conduit beaucoup \u00e0 consid\u00e9rer la question comme r\u00e9gl\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>Pourtant, en s\u2019appuyant sur de multiples sources de donn\u00e9es, notamment de nouvelles capacit\u00e9s d\u2019imagerie, la nouvelle \u00e9tude d\u00e9montre de mani\u00e8re convaincante le contraire.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: \u00e9chantillons pr\u00e9lev\u00e9s dans un puits de p\u00e9trole de la r\u00e9gion ont \u00e9galement r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 de rares cristaux de quartz et de feldspath \u00ab choqu\u00e9s \u00bb \u00e0 la m\u00eame profondeur que le fond du crat\u00e8re. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>La d\u00e9couverte de ces cristaux choqu\u00e9s a \u00e9t\u00e9 essentielle pour r\u00e9soudre l&rsquo;affaire, explique-t-il.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab Nous avons eu une chance exceptionnelle de les trouver \u2013 une v\u00e9ritable recherche d&rsquo;aiguille dans une botte de foin \u00bb, d\u00e9clare Nicholson . \u00ab Ils confirment sans \u00e9quivoque l&rsquo;hypoth\u00e8se du crat\u00e8re d&rsquo;impact, car leur structure ne peut \u00eatre cr\u00e9\u00e9e que par des pressions de choc extr\u00eames. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Ces r\u00e9sultats semblent donner raison au co-auteur Gareth Collins, professeur de sciences plan\u00e9taires \u00e0 l&rsquo;Imperial College de Londres, qui \u00e9tait pr\u00e9sent au d\u00e9bat de 2009 et qui soutient depuis longtemps le sc\u00e9nario de l&rsquo;impact.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab J\u2019ai toujours pens\u00e9 que l\u2019hypoth\u00e8se de l\u2019impact \u00e9tait l\u2019explication la plus simple et la plus coh\u00e9rente avec les observations \u00bb, explique Collins .<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab C&rsquo;est tr\u00e8s gratifiant d&rsquo;avoir enfin trouv\u00e9 la solution miracle \u00bb, ajoute- t-il . \u00ab Nous pouvons maintenant nous atteler \u00e0 la t\u00e2che passionnante consistant \u00e0 exploiter ces nouvelles donn\u00e9es extraordinaires pour mieux comprendre comment les impacts fa\u00e7onnent les plan\u00e8tes sous la surface, ce qui est tr\u00e8s difficile \u00e0 r\u00e9aliser sur d&rsquo;autres plan\u00e8tes. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Seulement environ 200 crat\u00e8res d&rsquo;impact terrestres ont \u00e9t\u00e9 confirm\u00e9s sur notre plan\u00e8te, et il est encore plus rare d&rsquo;en v\u00e9rifier un en mer, o\u00f9 seulement une trentaine sont reconnus.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab Silverpit est un crat\u00e8re d&rsquo;impact hyperv\u00e9loce rare et exceptionnellement pr\u00e9serv\u00e9 \u00bb, explique Nicholson . \u00ab Ces ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes sont rares car la Terre est une plan\u00e8te tr\u00e8s dynamique : la tectonique des plaques et l&rsquo;\u00e9rosion d\u00e9truisent presque toute trace de la plupart de ces \u00e9v\u00e9nements. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>En apportant un nouvel \u00e9clairage sur cette ancienne calamit\u00e9, les chercheurs esp\u00e8rent \u00e0 la fois comprendre l\u2019histoire de la Terre et aider l\u2019humanit\u00e9 \u00e0 se pr\u00e9parer \u00e0 la prochaine grande catastrophe.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab Nous pouvons utiliser ces r\u00e9sultats pour comprendre comment les impacts d&rsquo;ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes ont fa\u00e7onn\u00e9 notre plan\u00e8te \u00e0 travers l&rsquo;histoire \u00bb, explique Nicholson , \u00ab ainsi que pour pr\u00e9dire ce qui pourrait se passer en cas de collision
