L&rsquo;un de ces sommets a \u00e9t\u00e9 le th\u00e9\u00e2tre d&rsquo;une \u00e9ruption surprise qui a temporairement refroidi l&rsquo;h\u00e9misph\u00e8re nord en 1831.<\/p>\n<p>Cette photo satellite saisissante montre Simushir, une \u00eele russe m\u00e9connue et ancienne base navale sovi\u00e9tique, avec ses quatre volcans, dispos\u00e9s bout \u00e0 bout et r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement espac\u00e9s, formant une ligne \u00e9tonnamment droite. L&rsquo;un des quatre sommets a \u00e9t\u00e9 le th\u00e9\u00e2tre de l&rsquo;une des plus grandes \u00e9ruptions de l&rsquo;histoire, qui a profond\u00e9ment modifi\u00e9 le climat de la Terre il y a environ 200 ans.<\/p>\n<p>Simushir fait partie des \u00eeles Kouriles, un archipel de plus de 50 \u00eeles volcaniques sous contr\u00f4le russe situ\u00e9 dans l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an Pacifique Nord. Comme les autres \u00eeles Kouriles, la souverainet\u00e9 de Simushir a \u00e9t\u00e9 transmise \u00e0 plusieurs reprises entre deux pays voisins, la Russie et le Japon, au cours des 400 derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es. Utilis\u00e9e r\u00e9cemment comme base secr\u00e8te de sous-marins nucl\u00e9aires sovi\u00e9tiques jusqu&rsquo;en 1994, elle est aujourd&rsquo;hui inhabit\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>Ce territoire de 8 kilom\u00e8tres de long abrite quatre volcans majeurs visibles depuis l&rsquo;espace. Quant \u00e0 Uratman , culminant \u00e0 678 m, il ne pr\u00e9sente aucun signe d&rsquo;\u00e9ruption depuis au moins 12 000 ans. Un profond lagon, connu sous le nom de baie de Brouton, entoure \u00e9galement Uratman. C&rsquo;est l\u00e0 que les Sovi\u00e9tiques stockaient certains de leurs sous-marins nucl\u00e9aires.<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;\u00eele abrite un cinqui\u00e8me volcan, plus petit, nomm\u00e9 Goriaschaia Sopka, situ\u00e9 sur le flanc nord-est de Milna, mais il est indiscernable des volcans plus grands sur les photos satellites.
