M\u00e9lang\u00e9s \u00e0 de l&rsquo;eau, ces deux mat\u00e9riaux peuvent r\u00e9agir pour produire un b\u00e9ton solide.<\/p>\n<p>Mais il s&rsquo;av\u00e8re que ce n&rsquo;est pas tout. En 2023, une \u00e9quipe internationale de chercheurs dirig\u00e9e par le Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) a d\u00e9couvert que non seulement les mat\u00e9riaux \u00e9taient l\u00e9g\u00e8rement diff\u00e9rents de ce que nous pensions, mais que les techniques utilis\u00e9es pour les m\u00e9langer \u00e9taient \u00e9galement diff\u00e9rentes.<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;arme fatale, ce sont les petits morceaux blancs de chaux que l&rsquo;on peut trouver dans ce qui semble \u00eatre un b\u00e9ton bien m\u00e9lang\u00e9. La pr\u00e9sence de ces morceaux avait \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment attribu\u00e9e \u00e0 un mauvais m\u00e9lange ou \u00e0 de mauvais mat\u00e9riaux, mais cela n&rsquo;avait pas de sens pour Admir Masic, scientifique sp\u00e9cialiste des mat\u00e9riaux au MIT.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab L&rsquo;id\u00e9e que la pr\u00e9sence de ces clastes de chaux soit simplement attribu\u00e9e \u00e0 un contr\u00f4le de qualit\u00e9 m\u00e9diocre m&rsquo;a toujours d\u00e9rang\u00e9 \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Admir Masic en janvier 2023.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab Si les Romains ont d\u00e9ploy\u00e9 tant d&rsquo;efforts pour fabriquer un mat\u00e9riau de construction exceptionnel, en suivant toutes les recettes d\u00e9taill\u00e9es qui avaient \u00e9t\u00e9 optimis\u00e9es au cours de nombreux si\u00e8cles, pourquoi auraient-ils d\u00e9ploy\u00e9 si peu d&rsquo;efforts pour garantir la production d&rsquo;un produit final bien m\u00e9lang\u00e9 ? La compr\u00e9hension standard du b\u00e9ton pouzzolanique est qu&rsquo;il utilise de la chaux \u00e9teinte. Selon la th\u00e9orie, c&rsquo;est cette chaux \u00e9teinte que les anciens Romains m\u00e9langeaient \u00e0 la pouzzolane.<\/p>\n<p>D&rsquo;apr\u00e8s l&rsquo;analyse de l&rsquo;\u00e9quipe, les clastes de chaux de leurs \u00e9chantillons ne correspondent pas \u00e0 cette m\u00e9thode. Au contraire, le b\u00e9ton romain a probablement \u00e9t\u00e9 fabriqu\u00e9 en m\u00e9langeant la chaux vive directement avec la pouzzolane et l&rsquo;eau \u00e0 des temp\u00e9ratures extr\u00eamement \u00e9lev\u00e9es, seule ou en plus de la chaux \u00e9teinte, un processus que l&rsquo;\u00e9quipe appelle \u00ab m\u00e9lange \u00e0 chaud \u00bb et qui donne lieu aux clastes de chaux.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab Les avantages du m\u00e9lange \u00e0 chaud sont doubles \u00bb, explique M. Masic.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab Premi\u00e8rement, lorsque l&rsquo;ensemble du b\u00e9ton est chauff\u00e9 \u00e0 des temp\u00e9ratures \u00e9lev\u00e9es, cela permet des chimies qui ne seraient pas possibles si l&rsquo;on n&rsquo;utilisait que de la chaux \u00e9teinte, en produisant des compos\u00e9s associ\u00e9s \u00e0 des temp\u00e9ratures \u00e9lev\u00e9es qui ne se formeraient pas autrement. (Seymour et al., Science Advances , 2023)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Elle pr\u00e9sente un autre avantage : les clastes de chaux conf\u00e8rent au b\u00e9ton de remarquables capacit\u00e9s d&rsquo;autocicatrisation.<\/p>\n<p>Lorsque des fissures se forment dans le b\u00e9ton, elles se d\u00e9placent de pr\u00e9f\u00e9rence vers les clastes de chaux, qui ont une surface plus importante que les autres particules de la matrice. Lorsque l&rsquo;eau p\u00e9n\u00e8tre dans la fissure, elle r\u00e9agit avec la chaux pour former une solution riche en calcium qui s\u00e8che et durcit sous forme de carbonate de calcium, recollant la fissure et l&#8217;emp\u00eachant de s&rsquo;\u00e9tendre davantage.<\/p>\n<p>Ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne a \u00e9t\u00e9 observ\u00e9 dans le b\u00e9ton d&rsquo;un autre site vieux de 2 000 ans, la tombe de Caecilia Metella, o\u00f9 les fissures du b\u00e9ton ont \u00e9t\u00e9 remplies de calcite. Cela pourrait \u00e9galement expliquer pourquoi le b\u00e9ton romain des digues construites il y a 2 000 ans est rest\u00e9 intact pendant des mill\u00e9naires malgr\u00e9 les coups de boutoir constants de l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an.<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;\u00e9quipe a donc test\u00e9 ses conclusions en fabriquant du b\u00e9ton pouzzolanique \u00e0 partir de recettes anciennes et modernes utilisant de la chaux vive. Elle a \u00e9galement fabriqu\u00e9 un b\u00e9ton de contr\u00f4le sans chaux vive et a effectu\u00e9 des tests de fissuration.
