L&rsquo;ast\u00e9ro\u00efde meurtrier le plus embl\u00e9matique de la Terre provient des confins du syst\u00e8me solaire, rapportent des chercheurs dans la revue Science du 16 ao\u00fbt.<\/p>\n<p>Il y a environ 66 millions d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es, un ast\u00e9ro\u00efde a percut\u00e9 la mer au large de la p\u00e9ninsule mexicaine du Yucat\u00e1n, formant le crat\u00e8re de Chicxulub. Ce puissant impact pourrait avoir d\u00e9clench\u00e9 une extinction massive sur Terre, tuant plus de 60 % des esp\u00e8ces de la plan\u00e8te, y compris tous les dinosaures qui n&rsquo;\u00e9taient pas des oiseaux (SN : 1\/25\/17). Cependant, l&rsquo;abondance relative des isotopes de ruth\u00e9nium varie d&rsquo;un objet spatial \u00e0 l&rsquo;autre en fonction de leur origine.<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;\u00e9quipe a d\u00e9couvert que les signatures du ruth\u00e9nium dans les roches du PKg \u00e9taient impossibles \u00e0 distinguer les unes des autres, ce qui permet de les relier \u00e0 un m\u00eame \u00e9v\u00e9nement. Et cet \u00e9v\u00e9nement \u00e9tait bel et bien extraterrestre, et ne provenait pas de chutes de cendres dues \u00e0 d&rsquo;intenses \u00e9ruptions volcaniques qui ont \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 impliqu\u00e9es dans la disparition des dinosaures (SN : 9\/28\/23).<\/p>\n<p>La plupart des m\u00e9t\u00e9orites trouv\u00e9es sur Terre sont des ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes pierreux, ou siliceux, provenant de la ceinture d&rsquo;ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes situ\u00e9e entre Mars et Jupiter. Cette ceinture est \u00e9galement \u00e0 l&rsquo;origine des cinq impacteurs autres que celui de Chicxulub.<\/p>\n<p>Mais l&rsquo;impacteur de Chicxulub \u00e9tait un ast\u00e9ro\u00efde carbon\u00e9, provenant des confins du syst\u00e8me solaire, d&rsquo;une ancienne ceinture d&rsquo;ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes situ\u00e9e au-del\u00e0 de Jupiter (SN : 12\/16\/22).
