C&rsquo;est ce que pr\u00e9disent des chercheurs en se basant sur des donn\u00e9es sismiques et g\u00e9ochimiques locales.<\/p>\n<p>Islande, \u00e9ruptions dans la p\u00e9ninsule de Reykjanes<br \/>\nLes \u00e9ruptions dans la p\u00e9ninsule de Reykjanes ont forc\u00e9 les autorit\u00e9s \u00e0 d\u00e9clarer l&rsquo;\u00e9tat d&rsquo;urgence, huit \u00e9ruptions fissurales s&rsquo;\u00e9tant produites depuis 2021. Cette r\u00e9gion du sud-ouest abrite 70 % de la population islandaise, le seul a\u00e9roport international du pays et plusieurs centrales g\u00e9othermiques qui fournissent de l&rsquo;eau chaude et de l&rsquo;\u00e9lectricit\u00e9. L&rsquo;\u00e9ruption la plus r\u00e9cente, qui s&rsquo;est produite entre mai et juin, a forc\u00e9 l&rsquo;\u00e9vacuation des r\u00e9sidents et des visiteurs du Lagon bleu, une attraction touristique populaire, pour la troisi\u00e8me fois en plus de deux mois.<\/p>\n<p>Bien que l&rsquo;Islande connaisse r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement des \u00e9ruptions en raison de sa situation au-dessus d&rsquo;un point chaud volcanique, la p\u00e9ninsule de Reykjanes \u00e9tait \u00ab\u00a0en sommeil\u00a0\u00bb depuis 800 ans. En analysant les images de tomographie sismique et la composition des \u00e9chantillons de lave, ils ont d\u00e9couvert une partie des processus g\u00e9ologiques \u00e0 l&rsquo;origine de la nouvelle \u00e8re volcanique. Les chercheurs ont pr\u00e9dit que la r\u00e9gion pourrait devoir se pr\u00e9parer \u00e0 des \u00e9ruptions r\u00e9currentes qui dureraient des ann\u00e9es, des d\u00e9cennies, voire des si\u00e8cles.<\/p>\n<p>Les chercheurs ont publi\u00e9 leurs r\u00e9sultats dans un article paru le 26 juin dans \u00ab\u00a0Terra Nova\u00a0\u00bb. Le projet a fait l&rsquo;objet d&rsquo;une collaboration entre l&rsquo;universit\u00e9 de l&rsquo;Oregon, l&rsquo;universit\u00e9 d&rsquo;Uppsala en Su\u00e8de, l&rsquo;universit\u00e9 d&rsquo;Islande, l&rsquo;acad\u00e9mie des sciences de la R\u00e9publique tch\u00e8que et l&rsquo;universit\u00e9 de Californie (San Diego). Cette recherche fait suite \u00e0 une \u00e9tude ant\u00e9rieure publi\u00e9e dans Nature Communications sur les premi\u00e8res \u00e9ruptions de Reykjanes en 2021.<\/p>\n<p>La situation de l&rsquo;Islande<br \/>\nLa quasi-totalit\u00e9 de l&rsquo;Islande est construite \u00e0 partir de lave, explique Ilya Bindeman, volcanologue et professeur de sciences de la terre \u00e0 l&rsquo;Universit\u00e9 de l&rsquo;Oregon. Le pays se trouve sur la dorsale m\u00e9dio-atlantique, la plaque tectonique qui \u00e9loigne l&rsquo;Am\u00e9rique du Nord de l&rsquo;Eurasie. Bindeman. Le magma est principalement compos\u00e9 de huit \u00e9l\u00e9ments, dont l&rsquo;oxyg\u00e8ne et l&rsquo;hydrog\u00e8ne, et de 50 oligo-\u00e9l\u00e9ments diff\u00e9rents en concentrations plus faibles et en proportions diverses. Cette combinaison unique d&rsquo;\u00e9l\u00e9ments peut aider \u00e0 diff\u00e9rencier les sources magmatiques les unes des autres. Les scientifiques peuvent \u00e9galement mesurer l&rsquo;abondance des isotopes, des \u00e9l\u00e9ments ayant la m\u00eame propri\u00e9t\u00e9 chimique mais des masses diff\u00e9rentes, dans le magma. Il existe par exemple trois isotopes diff\u00e9rents de l&rsquo;oxyg\u00e8ne, a expliqu\u00e9 M. Bindeman.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Dans l&rsquo;air que nous respirons, il y a un m\u00e9lange de ces isotopes de l&rsquo;oxyg\u00e8ne et nous ne sentons pas la diff\u00e9rence\u00a0\u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 l&rsquo;expert. \u00ab\u00a0Les diff\u00e9rences ne sont g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement pas importantes pour les r\u00e9actions chimiques, mais il est important de les reconna\u00eetre car leurs abondances relatives dans le magma peuvent diff\u00e9rencier une source de magma d&rsquo;une autre.<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;analyse d&rsquo;\u00e9chantillons de roches de lave provenant de deux volcans diff\u00e9rents de la p\u00e9ninsule a r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 que leurs empreintes similaires impliquaient l&rsquo;existence d&rsquo;une zone de stockage de magma commune sous la p\u00e9ninsule. L&rsquo;imagerie de l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur de la terre bas\u00e9e sur les tremblements de terre locaux a \u00e9galement sugg\u00e9r\u00e9 l&rsquo;existence d&rsquo;un r\u00e9servoir \u00e0 environ 9-12 km dans la cro\u00fbte terrestre, la couche la moins profonde. Toutefois, ce r\u00e9servoir est finalement aliment\u00e9 par des roches en fusion situ\u00e9es plus profond\u00e9ment dans le manteau, ce qui peut provoquer des \u00e9ruptions de plusieurs dizaines d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es, avec des centaines de kilom\u00e8tres carr\u00e9s de magma remontant \u00e0 la surface, a expliqu\u00e9 M. Bindeman. Le point chaud de l&rsquo;Islande n&rsquo;aura aucun mal \u00e0 canaliser ce flux, a-t-il ajout\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c9ruptions en Islande, pr\u00e9visions incertaines<br \/>\nBien que cela marque le d\u00e9but d&rsquo;\u00e9pisodes volcaniques potentiellement persistants en Islande, les chercheurs ne peuvent pas encore pr\u00e9dire avec pr\u00e9cision la dur\u00e9e des \u00e9pisodes et les intervalles entre chacun d&rsquo;entre eux.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0La nature n&rsquo;est jamais r\u00e9guli\u00e8re\u00a0\u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 M. Bindeman. \u00ab\u00a0Nous ne savons pas dans quelle mesure et \u00e0 quelle fr\u00e9quence elle se poursuivra au cours des dix ou m\u00eame des cent prochaines ann\u00e9es.
