Pourtant, la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 du syst\u00e8me climatique est bien plus complexe.<\/p>\n<p>Depuis plusieurs d\u00e9cennies, les scientifiques \u00e9tudient la possibilit\u00e9 que certaines r\u00e9gions du globe puissent conna\u00eetre un refroidissement relatif malgr\u00e9 le r\u00e9chauffement global de la plan\u00e8te. Cette apparente contradiction est li\u00e9e au fonctionnement des grands courants oc\u00e9aniques, notamment dans l&rsquo;Atlantique Nord.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Le r\u00f4le essentiel du Gulf Stream<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Le Gulf Stream est l&rsquo;un des courants oc\u00e9aniques les plus connus au monde. Il transporte d&rsquo;immenses quantit\u00e9s de chaleur depuis les r\u00e9gions tropicales vers l&rsquo;Atlantique Nord.<\/p>\n<p>Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 lui, l&rsquo;Europe occidentale b\u00e9n\u00e9ficie d&rsquo;un climat relativement doux par rapport \u00e0 d&rsquo;autres r\u00e9gions situ\u00e9es aux m\u00eames latitudes. Les eaux chaudes remontent vers le nord, se refroidissent progressivement puis plongent en profondeur avant de repartir vers le sud.<br \/>\nCe m\u00e9canisme d\u00e9pend en partie de la salinit\u00e9 et de la densit\u00e9 de l&rsquo;eau.<br \/>\nOr, la fonte acc\u00e9l\u00e9r\u00e9e du Groenland et de la banquise arctique apporte de grandes quantit\u00e9s d&rsquo;eau douce dans l&rsquo;Atlantique Nord. Cette eau \u00e9tant moins dense que l&rsquo;eau sal\u00e9e, elle pourrait perturber certains m\u00e9canismes qui alimentent l&rsquo;AMOC.<br \/>\nPlusieurs \u00e9tudes sugg\u00e8rent qu&rsquo;un affaiblissement est d\u00e9j\u00e0 en cours depuis plusieurs d\u00e9cennies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Faut-il craindre une nouvelle \u00e8re glaciaire ?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>La r\u00e9ponse est non.<br \/>\nLes mod\u00e8les climatiques actuels ne pr\u00e9voient pas une glaciation soudaine de l&rsquo;Europe ni un sc\u00e9nario comparable \u00e0 celui du film Le Jour d&rsquo;apr\u00e8s.<\/p>\n<p>M\u00eame dans l&rsquo;hypoth\u00e8se d&rsquo;un ralentissement important de l&rsquo;AMOC, le r\u00e9chauffement global continuerait \u00e0 influencer fortement les temp\u00e9ratures mondiales.<\/p>\n<p>En revanche, certaines r\u00e9gions pourraient conna\u00eetre :<br \/>\ndes modifications des r\u00e9gimes de pr\u00e9cipitations ;<br \/>\ndes hivers localement plus froids que pr\u00e9vu ;<br \/>\ndes changements dans les trajectoires des temp\u00eates ;<br \/>\ndes perturbations des \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes marins ;<br \/>\nune \u00e9l\u00e9vation r\u00e9gionale du niveau de la mer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Les le\u00e7ons du pass\u00e9<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Les archives climatiques montrent que la Terre a d\u00e9j\u00e0 connu des changements rapides de circulation oc\u00e9anique.<\/p>\n<p>Des \u00e9v\u00e9nements survenus \u00e0 la fin de la derni\u00e8re p\u00e9riode glaciaire semblent avoir provoqu\u00e9 des refroidissements r\u00e9gionaux marqu\u00e9s dans l&rsquo;Atlantique Nord. Ces \u00e9pisodes constituent aujourd&rsquo;hui un sujet majeur de recherche.<\/p>\n<p>Cependant, les conditions actuelles sont diff\u00e9rentes de celles qui existaient il y a plusieurs milliers d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es. Certaines zones peuvent conna\u00eetre des \u00e9volutions tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rentes de la tendance moyenne mondiale.<\/p>\n<p>C&rsquo;est pourquoi les chercheurs surveillent avec attention l&rsquo;\u00e9volution du Groenland, de l&rsquo;Arctique et de l&rsquo;AMOC.
