Nos r\u00e9sultats sont maintenant publi\u00e9s dans Physical Review Letters.<\/p>\n<p>Les vagues sc\u00e9l\u00e9rates sont des colosses oc\u00e9aniques g\u00e9ants &#8211; deux fois plus hauts que les vagues avoisinantes &#8211; qui semblent surgir de nulle part. Les histoires de montagnes d&rsquo;eau inimaginables, hautes comme des immeubles de dix \u00e9tages, peuplent le folklore maritime et la litt\u00e9rature depuis des si\u00e8cles.<\/p>\n<p>La technologie r\u00e9cente a permis aux scientifiques de rep\u00e9rer les vagues sc\u00e9l\u00e9rates en pleine mer, faisant de ces l\u00e9gendes une r\u00e9alit\u00e9. La premi\u00e8re mesure, et la plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bre, est celle de la vague Draupner, un monstre de 25,6 m\u00e8tres enregistr\u00e9 en mer du Nord le 1er janvier 1995.<\/p>\n<p>Malgr\u00e9 les observations, nous ne savons toujours pas \u00e0 quelle fr\u00e9quence les vagues sc\u00e9l\u00e9rates se produisent, ni si nous pouvons les pr\u00e9voir. L&rsquo;enregistrement d&rsquo;une vague sc\u00e9l\u00e9rate n&rsquo;inclut pas les caract\u00e9ristiques sp\u00e9cifiques qui distinguent la mer autour d&rsquo;elle, de sorte que nous ne pouvons pas faire de comparaisons ou pr\u00e9dire les conditions n\u00e9cessaires.<\/p>\n<p>Notre \u00e9quipe a pris la mer \u00e0 bord du brise-glace sud-africain S.A. Agulhas-II pour traquer les vagues sc\u00e9l\u00e9rates dans l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an Austral, o\u00f9 des vents puissants fa\u00e7onnent les vagues les plus violentes de la Terre.<\/p>\n<p>Qu&rsquo;est-ce qui cr\u00e9e les vagues sc\u00e9l\u00e9rates ?<br \/>\nDans l&rsquo;environnement al\u00e9atoire des vagues oc\u00e9aniques, plusieurs m\u00e9canismes sont \u00e0 l&rsquo;origine des vagues sc\u00e9l\u00e9rates. L&rsquo;un d&rsquo;entre eux est le chevauchement de plusieurs vagues au m\u00eame endroit et au m\u00eame moment. Il en r\u00e9sulte une concentration d&rsquo;\u00e9nergie qui donne naissance \u00e0 de grandes vagues.<\/p>\n<p>Lorsque les conditions oc\u00e9aniques sont constantes, les vagues sc\u00e9l\u00e9rates g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9es de la sorte peuvent se produire une fois tous les deux jours \u00e0 un endroit donn\u00e9. Mais l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an \u00e9tant dynamique, les conditions sont rarement constantes pendant longtemps, ce qui r\u00e9duit la probabilit\u00e9 d&rsquo;apparition de vagues sc\u00e9l\u00e9rates. Le chevauchement des vagues peut \u00eatre minime, voire inexistant, m\u00eame lors de fortes temp\u00eates de longue dur\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>Des \u00e9tudes num\u00e9riques et en laboratoire sugg\u00e8rent que les grands vents contribuent \u00e9galement au d\u00e9veloppement de vagues sc\u00e9l\u00e9rates, car ils exercent une pression plus forte sur certaines formes de vagues d\u00e9j\u00e0 hautes. (NOAA)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Le vent pousse les vagues oc\u00e9aniques \u00e0 devenir progressivement plus hautes, plus longues et plus rapides. \u00c0 ce stade, les vagues sont \u00ab\u00a0jeunes\u00a0\u00bb et ont besoin de l&rsquo;apport du vent. Lorsque les vagues vont plus vite que le vent, elles cessent d&rsquo;\u00eatre acc\u00e9l\u00e9r\u00e9es par ce dernier et atteignent un stade \u00ab\u00a0mature\u00a0\u00bb en plein d\u00e9veloppement.<\/p>\n<p>Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 ce processus, le vent cr\u00e9e une situation chaotique o\u00f9 coexistent des vagues de dimensions et de directions diff\u00e9rentes.<\/p>\n<p>Nos r\u00e9centes observations montrent que des conditions de mer uniques avec des vagues sc\u00e9l\u00e9rates peuvent survenir au cours du stade \u00ab\u00a0jeune\u00a0\u00bb, lorsque les vagues sont particuli\u00e8rement sensibles au vent. Cela sugg\u00e8re que les param\u00e8tres du vent pourraient \u00eatre le cha\u00eenon manquant. Si le champ de vagues poss\u00e8de une quantit\u00e9 extr\u00eame d&rsquo;\u00e9nergie &#8211; lorsque les vagues sont abruptes et que la plupart d&rsquo;entre elles ont une amplitude, une longueur et une direction similaires &#8211; un autre m\u00e9canisme peut d\u00e9clencher la formation de vagues sc\u00e9l\u00e9rates.<\/p>\n<p>Ce m\u00e9canisme implique un \u00e9change d&rsquo;\u00e9nergie entre les vagues qui produit une \u00ab\u00a0auto-amplification\u00a0\u00bb, c&rsquo;est-\u00e0-dire qu&rsquo;une vague cro\u00eet de mani\u00e8re disproportionn\u00e9e au d\u00e9triment de ses voisines. En th\u00e9orie, des \u00e9tudes montrent que ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne pourrait d\u00e9cupler la probabilit\u00e9 de voir appara\u00eetre des vagues sc\u00e9l\u00e9rates.<\/p>\n<p>Si l&rsquo;auto-amplification se manifeste sous la forme de \u00ab\u00a0whitecaps\u00a0\u00bb (cr\u00eates de vagues agit\u00e9es, mousseuses et a\u00e9r\u00e9es), rien n&rsquo;indiquait jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent qu&rsquo;elle pouvait accro\u00eetre la probabilit\u00e9 de vagues sc\u00e9l\u00e9rates dans l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an.<\/p>\n<p>Des exp\u00e9riences r\u00e9centes sugg\u00e8rent que le vent peut accro\u00eetre la fr\u00e9quence d&rsquo;\u00e9v\u00e9nements extr\u00eames tels que les vagues sc\u00e9l\u00e9rates. Mais cet aspect n&rsquo;a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9tudi\u00e9 de mani\u00e8re approfondie.<\/p>\n<p>Qu&rsquo;avons-nous d\u00e9couvert dans l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an Austral ?<br \/>\nNous avons utilis\u00e9 une nouvelle m\u00e9thode d&rsquo;imagerie tridimensionnelle pour scanner la surface de l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an tout au long de notre exp\u00e9dition. Elle reproduit la vision humaine : des capteurs plac\u00e9s \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 les uns des autres enregistrent des s\u00e9quences d&rsquo;images simultan\u00e9es. Des algorithmes informatiques font ensuite correspondre les paires d&rsquo;images pour reconstruire les profondeurs tridimensionnelles &#8211; la surface ondul\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>Alors que notre navire traversait plusieurs temp\u00eates, les capteurs ont captur\u00e9 des donn\u00e9es durant les diff\u00e9rentes phases de croissance des vagues, depuis les premiers stades des jeunes vagues aliment\u00e9es par le vent jusqu&rsquo;aux vagues matures qui ne sont pas influenc\u00e9es par ce dernier.<\/p>\n<p>Nos r\u00e9sultats montrent que les jeunes vagues pr\u00e9sentent des signes d&rsquo;auto-amplification et une probabilit\u00e9 accrue de vagues sc\u00e9l\u00e9rates. Nous n&rsquo;en avons d\u00e9tect\u00e9 aucune dans ces conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Nos r\u00e9sultats remettent en question les id\u00e9es re\u00e7ues, \u00e0 savoir que l&rsquo;auto-amplification ne modifie pas la probabilit\u00e9 d&rsquo;apparition de vagues sc\u00e9l\u00e9rates dans l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an. Nous avons \u00e9galement montr\u00e9 que lors de l&rsquo;\u00e9laboration d&rsquo;outils de pr\u00e9vision des vagues sc\u00e9l\u00e9rates, nous devons tenir compte du vent de mani\u00e8re approfondie.
