Le t\u00e9lescope spatial James Webb (JWST) de la NASA a r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 la pr\u00e9sence de dioxyde de carbone artificiel sur la lune glac\u00e9e de Jupiter, ce qui soul\u00e8ve la possibilit\u00e9 que ce monde aquatique glacial puisse abriter la vie.<\/p>\n<p>Europe, qui est un peu plus petite que la lune de la Terre, est recouverte d&rsquo;une cro\u00fbte de glace d&rsquo;eau enveloppant un oc\u00e9an d&rsquo;eau sal\u00e9e. La pr\u00e9sence d&rsquo;eau liquide fait d&rsquo;Europe un objet d&rsquo;exploration intriguant pour les scientifiques int\u00e9ress\u00e9s par la vie extraterrestre. Mais jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent, personne n&rsquo;avait d\u00e9montr\u00e9 que l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an contenait les mol\u00e9cules appropri\u00e9es, en particulier le carbone, qui est un \u00e9l\u00e9ment fondamental de la vie sur Terre.<\/p>\n<p>La nouvelle d\u00e9tection par le JWST est intrigante car le dioxyde de carbone ne semble pas avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 transport\u00e9 par une m\u00e9t\u00e9orite ou un ast\u00e9ro\u00efde, et il appara\u00eet dans une r\u00e9gion g\u00e9ologiquement jeune de la lune appel\u00e9e Tara Regio, ce qui sugg\u00e8re que le gaz pourrait s&rsquo;\u00eatre form\u00e9 \u00e0 l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur de la lune elle-m\u00eame.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Les observations pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes du t\u00e9lescope spatial Hubble montrent que Tara Regio contient du sel d&rsquo;origine oc\u00e9anique\u00a0\u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Samantha Trumbo, plan\u00e9tologue \u00e0 l&rsquo;universit\u00e9 de Cornell, dans un communiqu\u00e9. \u00ab\u00a0Aujourd&rsquo;hui, nous constatons que le dioxyde de carbone y est \u00e9galement fortement concentr\u00e9. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la puissance du JWST, les chercheurs n&rsquo;ont eu besoin que de quelques minutes de l&rsquo;observatoire pour discerner de nouveaux d\u00e9tails sur Europe, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Heidi Hammel, de l&rsquo;Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, dans le communiqu\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Les chercheurs ont trouv\u00e9 des traces de dioxyde de carbone cristallin et amorphe sur Europe. (Le terme \u00ab\u00a0amorphe\u00a0\u00bb fait r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 une forme mol\u00e9culaire d\u00e9sorganis\u00e9e, par rapport aux structures rigides des cristaux). Ils ont observ\u00e9 des concentrations \u00e9lev\u00e9es dans ce que les astronomes appellent les \u00ab\u00a0r\u00e9gions de chaos\u00a0\u00bb, o\u00f9 la cro\u00fbte superficielle a \u00e9t\u00e9 perturb\u00e9e et o\u00f9 il y a probablement des mouvements de mat\u00e9riaux entre la cro\u00fbte et l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an int\u00e9rieur. Comme le dioxyde de carbone ne reste pas longtemps stable \u00e0 la surface d&rsquo;Europe, les chercheurs pensent que le carbone est remont\u00e9 de l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an relativement r\u00e9cemment. La surface d&rsquo;Europe est, en moyenne, \u00e2g\u00e9e d&rsquo;environ 60 millions d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es, comme l&rsquo;indiquent les quelques crat\u00e8res qui pars\u00e8ment la glace, d&rsquo;apr\u00e8s les recherches men\u00e9es en 2022. Le terrain chaotique est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement plus jeune que la moyenne.<\/p>\n<p>Les scientifiques pr\u00e9voient deux missions vers Europe dans les ann\u00e9es \u00e0 venir. La mission Clipper de la NASA, dont le lancement est pr\u00e9vu en 2024, permettra d&rsquo;observer la lune depuis son orbite, en mettant l&rsquo;accent sur la recherche de mol\u00e9cules et de conditions propices \u00e0 la vie. De son c\u00f4t\u00e9, l&rsquo;Agence spatiale europ\u00e9enne a lanc\u00e9 en avril la sonde JUICE (Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer), qui arrivera sur la g\u00e9ante gazeuse en 2031.
