Les scientifiques de l\u2019Administration nationale des oc\u00e9ans et de l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re des \u00c9tats-Unis (NOAA) ont d\u00e9couvert des traces de vagues de chaleur marine plus profondes que les pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes. Ces variantes peuvent produire un r\u00e9chauffement plus important, durer plus longtemps et se produire avec un r\u00e9chauffement de surface faible ou nul, selon les chercheurs. Ces vagues repr\u00e9sentent donc un plus grand danger.<\/p>\n<p>Les oc\u00e9ans sont les principaux responsables de l\u2019absorption de la chaleur suppl\u00e9mentaire produite par les \u00e9missions de carbone d\u2019origine humaine. Bien qu\u2019ils ne soient pas imm\u00e9diatement consid\u00e9r\u00e9s comme les plus touch\u00e9s par le r\u00e9chauffement climatique, leur temp\u00e9rature a augment\u00e9 de 1,5 \u00b0C au cours du si\u00e8cle dernier et la fr\u00e9quence des vagues de chaleur marines a augment\u00e9 de 50 % ces derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es.<\/p>\n<p>Surveiller les fonds oc\u00e9aniques est plus difficile que surveiller la surface. Les chercheurs ont donc utilis\u00e9 une proc\u00e9dure appel\u00e9e \u00ab r\u00e9analyse \u00bb pour combler les lacunes de donn\u00e9es. Dans les zones peu profondes, les eaux de surface et souterraines se m\u00e9langent, entra\u00eenant des vagues de chaleur coexistantes. Cependant, ces vagues de chaleur peuvent \u00e9galement se produire ind\u00e9pendamment de celles de la surface, ce qui peut avoir des cons\u00e9quences importantes pour la gestion des p\u00eacheries et la biodiversit\u00e9 marine.<\/p>\n<p>En 2015, la prolif\u00e9ration d\u2019algues dangereuses et la destruction de l\u2019habitat dans les for\u00eats de varech ont entra\u00een\u00e9 des interdictions de p\u00eache aux coquillages, causant une perte de plus de 185 millions de dollars \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9conomie am\u00e9ricaine. De plus, les temp\u00e9ratures anormalement \u00e9lev\u00e9es des eaux de fond ont \u00e9t\u00e9 associ\u00e9es \u00e0 divers probl\u00e8mes biologiques tels que des changements dans les taux de survie des jeunes morues de l\u2019Atlantique, la propagation de poissons-lions envahissants et le blanchiment des coraux.<\/p>\n<p>Des \u00e9tudes ont \u00e9galement r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 une chute de 71 % de la population de cabillauds dans le golfe de l\u2019Alaska entre 2015 et 2017, ainsi qu\u2019une prosp\u00e9rit\u00e9 du syst\u00e8me dans des conditions oc\u00e9aniques in\u00e9dites. Les cons\u00e9quences \u00e9conomiques de ces perturbations se chiffrent en millions de dollars de pertes pour les p\u00eacheries commerciales et non commerciales, ainsi que pour les municipalit\u00e9s c\u00f4ti\u00e8res.<\/p>\n<p>En somme, l\u2019impact des vagues de chaleur sous-marines sur les \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes marins et les activit\u00e9s humaines qui en d\u00e9pendent est significatif.
