Il mesure 50 fois plus que la plupart des com\u00e8tes connues, \u00e0 pr\u00e8s de 140 kilom\u00e8tres de large (environ 85 miles).<\/p>\n<p>Cependant, cette taille effroyablement grande \u2013 ou plut\u00f4t son apparente bizarrerie \u2013 pourrait en dire plus sur nous et sur notre conception limit\u00e9e des com\u00e8tes que sur toute autre chose.<\/p>\n<p>C\/2014 UN271 est originaire du nuage d&rsquo;Oort : une gigantesque dispersion sph\u00e9rique d&rsquo;objets glac\u00e9s qui entoure le Soleil dans les parties les plus profondes et les plus \u00e9loign\u00e9es de notre syst\u00e8me solaire (si loin, en fait, on pense qu&rsquo;il s&rsquo;\u00e9tend sur au moins un quart du chemin vers le syst\u00e8me stellaire le plus proche, Alpha Centauri).<\/p>\n<p>Cela semble assez gros, non ? C&rsquo;est, th\u00e9oriquement parlant. On pense qu&rsquo;elles se sont form\u00e9es t\u00f4t dans le syst\u00e8me solaire interne, avant d&rsquo;\u00eatre projet\u00e9es vers ses franges les plus \u00e9loign\u00e9es par les effets gravitationnels de plan\u00e8tes g\u00e9antes comme Jupiter et Saturne.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Cette com\u00e8te est litt\u00e9ralement la pointe de l&rsquo;iceberg de plusieurs milliers de com\u00e8tes qui sont trop faibles pour \u00eatre observ\u00e9es dans les parties les plus \u00e9loign\u00e9es du syst\u00e8me solaire\u00a0\u00bb, explique l&rsquo;astronome David Jewitt de l&rsquo;UCLA.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Nous avons toujours soup\u00e7onn\u00e9 que cette com\u00e8te devait \u00eatre grosse parce qu&rsquo;elle est si brillante \u00e0 une si grande distance. Maintenant, nous confirmons que c&rsquo;est le cas.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Dans la nouvelle analyse, Jewitt et ses coll\u00e8gues chercheurs, dirig\u00e9s par le premier auteur Man-To Hui de l&rsquo;Universit\u00e9 des sciences et technologies de Macao, ont calcul\u00e9 la taille de C\/2014 UN271 dans la r\u00e9solution la plus \u00e9lev\u00e9e \u00e0 ce jour. Des analyses de suivi ult\u00e9rieures ont r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 que C\/2014 UN271 avait en fait \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9tect\u00e9 d\u00e8s le d\u00e9but. comme 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Pourtant, m\u00eame ce premier aper\u00e7u ne commence pas \u00e0 englober la dur\u00e9e incroyable du voyage de la com\u00e8te.
