Il aligne actuellement les 18 segments qui composent son miroir primaire et sera pr\u00eat \u00e0 scruter l\u2019Univers d\u2019ici quelques mois. Entre autres objectifs scientifiques, il servira \u00e0 rechercher les composants n\u00e9cessaires \u00e0 l\u2019apparition de la vie dans l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re des exoplan\u00e8tes. Et sur ce point, Chris Hadfield, un ancien astronaute canadien, a sa propre opinion : le t\u00e9lescope devrait selon lui se focaliser sur Kepler-442b, une exoplan\u00e8te situ\u00e9e \u00e0 environ 1200 ann\u00e9es-lumi\u00e8re, tr\u00e8s susceptible d\u2019h\u00e9berger la vie.<\/p>\n<p>Alors pourquoi Kepler-442b en particulier ?<\/p>\n<p>Kepler-442b (\u00e9galement connue sous sa d\u00e9signation d&rsquo;objet d&rsquo;int\u00e9r\u00eat Kepler KOI-4742.01 ) est une exoplan\u00e8te confirm\u00e9e de taille proche de la Terre , probablement rocheuse, en orbite dans la zone habitable de la principale de type K. \u00e9toile \u00e0 s\u00e9quence Kepler-442, \u00e0 environ 1 206 ann\u00e9es-lumi\u00e8re (370 pc ) de la Terre dans la constellation de la Lyre.<\/p>\n<p>La plan\u00e8te orbite autour de son \u00e9toile h\u00f4te \u00e0 une distance d&rsquo;environ 0,409 UA (61,2 millions de km ; 38,0 millions de mi) avec une p\u00e9riode orbitale d&rsquo;environ 112,3 jours. Elle a une masse d&rsquo;environ 2,3 et un rayon d&rsquo;environ 1,34 fois la Terre. Non seulement elle se situe dans la zone habitable de son syst\u00e8me, c&rsquo;est \u00e9galement l&rsquo;une des candidates les plus prometteuses pour l&rsquo;habitabilit\u00e9 potentielle, car son \u00e9toile m\u00e8re est au moins 40% moins massive que le Soleil &#8211; ainsi, elle peut vivre jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 une dur\u00e9e d&rsquo;environ 30 milliards d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es.<\/p>\n<p>La plan\u00e8te a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9couverte par le vaisseau spatial Kepler de la NASA en utilisant la m\u00e9thode de transit , dans laquelle il mesure l&rsquo;effet de gradation qu&rsquo;une plan\u00e8te provoque lorsqu&rsquo;elle passe devant son \u00e9toile. La NASA a annonc\u00e9 la confirmation de l&rsquo;exoplan\u00e8te le 6 janvier 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Sur son compte Twitter, Chris Hadfield affirme qu\u2019il s\u2019agit d\u2019une \u00ab excellente plan\u00e8te \u00bb \u00e0 \u00e9tudier pour James Webb, tout en relayant un autre tweet pr\u00e9cisant que Kepler-442b serait m\u00eame encore plus habitable que la Terre. De taille et de masse l\u00e9g\u00e8rement plus grandes que la Terre, cette plan\u00e8te rocheuse orbite autour d\u2019une \u00e9toile de type K, \u00e0 une distance d\u2019environ 0,4 unit\u00e9 astronomique, avec une p\u00e9riode d\u2019environ 112 jours. Son rayon est d\u2019environ 1,3 fois celui de la Terre \u2014 sugg\u00e9rant qu\u2019il s\u2019agit probablement d\u2019une plan\u00e8te rocheuse \u2014 et il y r\u00e8gne une temp\u00e9rature d\u2019\u00e9quilibre de 233 K (-40 \u00b0C). Parce qu\u2019elle est plus proche de son \u00e9toile que la Terre ne l\u2019est du Soleil, elle tourne probablement beaucoup plus lentement que la Terre (de par les effets de mar\u00e9e) et la dur\u00e9e d\u2019une journ\u00e9e pourrait atteindre des semaines, voire des mois.<\/p>\n<p>Les \u00e9toiles de type K (ou naines oranges) sont moins chaudes et plus petites que le Soleil, mais elles vivent plus longtemps et peuvent demeurer sur la s\u00e9quence principale pendant 18 \u00e0 34 milliards d\u2019ann\u00e9es (la dur\u00e9e de vie du Soleil est quant \u00e0 elle estim\u00e9e \u00e0 10 milliards d\u2019ann\u00e9es).
