Un tr\u00e9sor de diamants pourrait \u00eatre sem\u00e9 dans la cro\u00fbte de Mercure.<\/p>\n<p>Des milliards d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es d&rsquo;impacts de m\u00e9t\u00e9orites pourraient avoir transform\u00e9 une grande partie de la surface de Mercure en pierres pr\u00e9cieuses scintillantes. C&rsquo;est ce qu&rsquo;a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le plan\u00e9tologue Kevin Cannon le 10 mars 2022 lors de la Lunar and Planetary Science Conference \u00e0 The Woodlands, au Texas. Ses simulations informatiques pr\u00e9disent que de tels impacts pourraient avoir transform\u00e9 environ un tiers de la cro\u00fbte de la petite plan\u00e8te en un stock de diamants plusieurs fois sup\u00e9rieur \u00e0 celui de la Terre.<\/p>\n<p>Les diamants sont forg\u00e9s sous d&rsquo;immenses pressions et temp\u00e9ratures. Sur Terre, les pierres pr\u00e9cieuses se cristallisent en profondeur &#8211; \u00e0 au moins 150 kilom\u00e8tres de profondeur &#8211; puis remontent \u00e0 la surface lors d&rsquo;\u00e9ruptions volcaniques (SN : 9\/14\/20). Mais des \u00e9tudes sur les m\u00e9t\u00e9orites sugg\u00e8rent que les diamants peuvent \u00e9galement se former lors d&rsquo;un impact.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Lorsque ces impacts se produisent, ils cr\u00e9ent des pressions et des temp\u00e9ratures tr\u00e8s \u00e9lev\u00e9es qui peuvent transformer le carbone en diamant\u00a0\u00bb, explique M. Cannon, de l&rsquo;\u00e9cole des mines du Colorado, \u00e0 Golden.<\/p>\n<p>Ayant \u00e0 l&rsquo;esprit les diamants issus d&rsquo;impacts, M. Cannon s&rsquo;est tourn\u00e9 vers la plan\u00e8te la plus proche du soleil. Des \u00e9tudes de la surface de la plan\u00e8te et des exp\u00e9riences avec des roches fondues sugg\u00e8rent que la cro\u00fbte de la plan\u00e8te pourrait conserver des fragments d&rsquo;une ancienne enveloppe de graphite &#8211; un min\u00e9ral fait de carbone (SN : 3\/7\/16). \u00ab\u00a0Ce que nous pensons qu&rsquo;il s&rsquo;est pass\u00e9, c&rsquo;est que lorsque [Mercure] s&rsquo;est form\u00e9e, il y avait un oc\u00e9an magmatique, et que le graphite s&rsquo;est cristallis\u00e9 \u00e0 partir de ce magma\u00a0\u00bb, dit Cannon.<\/p>\n<p>Puis, le bombardement. La surface de Mercure est aujourd&rsquo;hui fortement crat\u00e9ris\u00e9e, preuve d&rsquo;une histoire riche en impacts. Une grande partie de la pr\u00e9tendue cro\u00fbte de graphite aurait \u00e9t\u00e9 battue et transform\u00e9e en diamant, a suppos\u00e9 M. Cannon convient que les impacts ult\u00e9rieurs auraient probablement d\u00e9truit certains diamants. Mais les pertes auraient \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00ab\u00a0tr\u00e8s limit\u00e9es\u00a0\u00bb, dit-il, car le point de fusion ultime du diamant d\u00e9passe les 4000\u00b0 Celsius. Les futures simulations int\u00e9greront la refonte due aux impacts, dit-il, afin d&rsquo;affiner la taille potentielle des r\u00e9serves actuelles de diamants de Mercure.<\/p>\n<p>Une occasion de rechercher des diamants sur Mercure pourrait se pr\u00e9senter en 2025, lorsque la mission BepiColombo atteindra la plan\u00e8te. Les diamants refl\u00e8tent une signature distincte de la lumi\u00e8re infrarouge, explique M.
