Depuis la d\u00e9couverte du crat\u00e8re de 31 kilom\u00e8tres de large, les chercheurs tentent de d\u00e9terminer son \u00e2ge r\u00e9el.<\/p>\n<p>Cependant, \u00e9tant donn\u00e9 qu&rsquo;une grande partie des preuves se trouve sous un kilom\u00e8tre de glace, il s&rsquo;est av\u00e9r\u00e9 difficile de recueillir des preuves directes.<\/p>\n<p>En utilisant deux m\u00e9thodes de datation diff\u00e9rentes, des chercheurs danois et su\u00e9dois sont parvenus \u00e0 une date similaire, \u00e0 laquelle les experts ne s&rsquo;attendaient pas.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0D\u00e9terminer le nouvel \u00e2ge du crat\u00e8re nous a tous surpris\u00a0\u00bb, d\u00e9clare le g\u00e9ologue Michael Storey, du Mus\u00e9e d&rsquo;histoire naturelle du Danemark.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Je suis convaincu que nous avons d\u00e9termin\u00e9 l&rsquo;\u00e2ge r\u00e9el du crat\u00e8re, qui est beaucoup plus ancien que ce que beaucoup de gens pensaient auparavant.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Les preuves proviennent des berges des rivi\u00e8res situ\u00e9es en aval du glacier Hiawatha, qui transportent \u00e0 l&rsquo;air libre des roches et du sable provenant du substratum rocheux situ\u00e9 sous la calotte glaciaire. En chauffant au laser du sable recueilli en aval du glacier, l&rsquo;\u00e9quipe a pu lib\u00e9rer du gaz argon de chaque grain.<\/p>\n<p>Les isotopes de ce gaz ont ensuite \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9s pour d\u00e9terminer la quantit\u00e9 de d\u00e9sint\u00e9gration radioactive survenue depuis le moment o\u00f9 les min\u00e9raux ont fondu sous l&rsquo;impact de la m\u00e9t\u00e9orite.<\/p>\n<p>La m\u00e9thode de l&rsquo;argon sugg\u00e8re que l&rsquo;ast\u00e9ro\u00efde Hiawatha a frapp\u00e9 la Terre \u00e0 la fin du Pal\u00e9oc\u00e8ne, il y a quelque temps entre 56 et 66 millions d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es, tandis que la technique de l&rsquo;uranium-plomb a abouti \u00e0 une date remontant \u00e0 58 millions d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es.<\/p>\n<p>Le crat\u00e8re Hiawatha est pr\u00e8s de six fois plus petit que le crat\u00e8re Chicxulub au Mexique, ce qui signifie qu&rsquo;il n&rsquo;aurait pas \u00e9t\u00e9 aussi d\u00e9sastreux que l&rsquo;\u00e9v\u00e9nement qui a conduit les dinosaures \u00e0 l&rsquo;extinction huit millions d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es auparavant.<\/p>\n<p>Cela dit, l&rsquo;impact de Hiawatha aurait provoqu\u00e9 un choc un million de fois plus puissant qu&rsquo;une bombe atomique, ce qui est plus que suffisant pour avoir un impact sur le climat local ou m\u00eame mondial de l&rsquo;\u00e9poque.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 la fin du Pl\u00e9istoc\u00e8ne, le Groenland ne ressemblait pas du tout \u00e0 ce qu&rsquo;il est aujourd&rsquo;hui.
