La circulation m\u00e9ridienne de retournement de l&rsquo;Atlantique (AMOC) est un syst\u00e8me de courants oc\u00e9aniques qui transporte de l&rsquo;eau chaude et sal\u00e9e des tropiques vers l&rsquo;Atlantique Nord. Lorsque l&rsquo;eau se refroidit, elle devient plus dense et coule, dans un processus connu sous le nom de renversement. L&rsquo;eau froide et profonde retourne alors vers l&rsquo;\u00e9quateur. Ce processus de transport joue un r\u00f4le essentiel dans le climat de la Terre.<\/p>\n<p>Bien que les scientifiques sachent que le stress du vent de surface peut affecter la variabilit\u00e9 de l&rsquo;AMOC d&rsquo;une ann\u00e9e \u00e0 l&rsquo;autre, l&rsquo;impact du stress du vent sur les \u00e9chelles d\u00e9cennales est moins clair. Dans une nouvelle \u00e9tude, Lohmann et al. comblent cette lacune en utilisant MPI-ESM (Max Planck Institute for Meteorology Earth System Model). Ils ont effectu\u00e9 des simulations sur 250 ans dans lesquelles la contrainte de vent moyenne re\u00e7ue par l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an a \u00e9t\u00e9 modifi\u00e9e de fa\u00e7on \u00e0 \u00eatre soit la moiti\u00e9 soit le double de celle d&rsquo;une simulation de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence.<\/p>\n<p>Ils ont d\u00e9couvert qu&rsquo;en cas de r\u00e9duction du for\u00e7age par le vent, la force de l&rsquo;AMOC diminue fortement. La r\u00e9duction du transport de chaleur et de sel vers le nord et, par la suite, l&rsquo;augmentation de l&rsquo;\u00e9tendue de la glace de mer hivernale et la r\u00e9duction de la densit\u00e9 de surface arr\u00eatent la production d&rsquo;eau profonde froide qui se forme habituellement dans l&rsquo;Atlantique Nord subpolaire et les mers nordiques.<\/p><div class=\"1665f18d14f35dd9e7566e1a8ac9a3e9\" data-index=\"2\" style=\"float: none; margin:10px 0 10px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n     data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2860849627502538\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"3019501113\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>En cas de renforcement du for\u00e7age par le vent, les auteurs ont constat\u00e9 que des effets oppos\u00e9s \u00e0 ceux d&rsquo;un for\u00e7age r\u00e9duit par le vent se produisent initialement et que la force de l&rsquo;AMOC augmente. Avec le temps, cependant, l&rsquo;AMOC s&rsquo;affaiblit et se stabilise \u00e0 une force similaire \u00e0 celle observ\u00e9e dans la simulation de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence. Les chercheurs attribuent cet effet non lin\u00e9aire \u00e0 une diminution de la densit\u00e9 de surface (apr\u00e8s l&rsquo;augmentation initiale) dans l&rsquo;Atlantique Nord et \u00e0 l&rsquo;affaiblissement de la formation des eaux profondes subpolaires.<\/p>\n<p>Les r\u00e9sultats indiquent que l&rsquo;intensification ou l&rsquo;affaiblissement futur des courants-jets dans l&rsquo;h\u00e9misph\u00e8re Nord pourrait affecter la circulation et le climat de l&rsquo;Atlantique Nord. Selon les auteurs, des analyses suppl\u00e9mentaires avec d&rsquo;autres mod\u00e8les climatiques apporteront un soutien suppl\u00e9mentaire aux nouvelles conclusions.
