Appel\u00e9s \u00ab\u00a0lacs atmosph\u00e9riques\u00a0\u00bb, ces \u00e9v\u00e9nements sont des bassins de vapeur d&rsquo;eau concentr\u00e9e qui se d\u00e9placent lentement et peuvent durer plusieurs jours.<\/p>\n<p>Les sp\u00e9cialistes de l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re Brian Mapes et Wei-Ming Tsai ont fait cette d\u00e9couverte en \u00e9tudiant les sch\u00e9mas m\u00e9t\u00e9orologiques au-dessus de l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an Indien, une r\u00e9gion qui, selon eux, n&rsquo;attire pas beaucoup l&rsquo;attention des m\u00e9t\u00e9orologues. L&rsquo;\u00e9quipe a sp\u00e9cifiquement examin\u00e9 les mod\u00e8les de pluie et de vapeur d&rsquo;eau qui se produisent \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9chelle quotidienne.<\/p>\n<p>Les nouvelles structures sont li\u00e9es aux rivi\u00e8res atmosph\u00e9riques, un ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne courant et bien \u00e9tudi\u00e9 impliquant des panaches longs et fins d&rsquo;humidit\u00e9 concentr\u00e9e qui peuvent s&rsquo;\u00e9tendre sur des milliers de kilom\u00e8tres. Ces rivi\u00e8res rapides peuvent transporter d&rsquo;\u00e9normes quantit\u00e9s d&rsquo;eau, qu&rsquo;elles d\u00e9versent dans leur sillage sous forme d&rsquo;une bande de pluie.<\/p>\n<p>Selon l&rsquo;\u00e9quipe, les lacs atmosph\u00e9riques commencent comme des rivi\u00e8res, mais \u00e0 un moment donn\u00e9, ils se r\u00e9tr\u00e9cissent pour former une masse isol\u00e9e et concentr\u00e9e de vapeur d&rsquo;eau. Ces lacs d\u00e9rivent alors tr\u00e8s lentement dans le ciel, dans des zones o\u00f9 la vitesse du vent est \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s nulle. Ils peuvent apporter beaucoup de pluie \u00e0 la surface. Si l&rsquo;on prend le terme \u00ab\u00a0lac\u00a0\u00bb au pied de la lettre, l&rsquo;\u00e9quipe affirme qu&rsquo;ils contiennent suffisamment d&rsquo;eau pour former une flaque de quelques centim\u00e8tres de profondeur et d&rsquo;environ 1 000 km de large.<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;\u00e9quipe a \u00e9tudi\u00e9 cinq ann\u00e9es de donn\u00e9es satellitaires de l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an Indien et a identifi\u00e9 17 lacs atmosph\u00e9riques qui ont dur\u00e9 plus de six jours. Ils se sont produits en toutes saisons, et g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement \u00e0 moins de 10 degr\u00e9s de l&rsquo;\u00e9quateur. Ce faisant, ils peuvent apporter beaucoup de pluie \u00e0 ces r\u00e9gions.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0C&rsquo;est un endroit qui est sec en moyenne, alors quand ces [lacs atmosph\u00e9riques] se produisent, ils sont s\u00fbrement tr\u00e8s importants\u00a0\u00bb, explique M.
