Mais les orbiteurs ont rep\u00e9r\u00e9 un grand gisement volcanique qui semble \u00eatre relativement r\u00e9cent &#8211; seulement environ 53000 ans &#8211; ce qui apporte l&rsquo;id\u00e9e que la plan\u00e8te rouge \u00e9tait r\u00e9cemment, ou est toujours, habitable pour les microbes souterrains.<\/p>\n<p>Mars porte encore les cicatrices de son pass\u00e9 volcanique. Sa surface est parsem\u00e9e de ce qui pourrait \u00eatre les restes de super-volcans gigantesques et \u00e9teints, et des preuves sugg\u00e8rent m\u00eame que l&rsquo;un de ces derniers a explos\u00e9 sans interruption pendant 2 milliards d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es. Cependant, on pense que le volcanisme martien a r\u00e9ellement \u00e9t\u00e9 actif il y a environ 3 \u00e0 4 milliards d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es, et qu&rsquo;il s&rsquo;est pratiquement \u00e9teint au cours des derniers millions d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es &#8211; malgr\u00e9 l&rsquo;\u00e9tranget\u00e9 tr\u00e8s faible de tremblements de terre.<\/p>\n<p>Mais les scientifiques ont d\u00e9couvert une cicatrice qui semble \u00eatre beaucoup plus r\u00e9cente. Rep\u00e9r\u00e9 depuis l&rsquo;orbite dans une r\u00e9gion appel\u00e9e Elysium Planitia, la zone concern\u00e9e est un d\u00e9p\u00f4t sombre qui mesure 12,9 km de large et entoure une grande fissure de 32,2 km de long. L&rsquo;\u00e9quipe dit que cela ne ressemble en rien de ce qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 observ\u00e9 dans la r\u00e9gion, ni nulle part ailleurs sur Mars.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 en juger par ses couches par rapport \u00e0 son environnement, ainsi que par le nombre de petits crat\u00e8res \u00e0 l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur, l&rsquo;\u00e9quipe a calcul\u00e9 son \u00e2ge \u00e0 environ 53 000 ans. Cela ne semble pas \u00eatre le r\u00e9sultat d&rsquo;\u00e9ruptions habituelles de coul\u00e9es de lave, mais un \u00e9v\u00e9nement plus explosif provoqu\u00e9 par des gaz en expansion, appel\u00e9 \u00e9ruption pyroclastique.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Cette caract\u00e9ristique recouvre les coul\u00e9es de lave environnantes et semble \u00eatre un d\u00e9p\u00f4t relativement frais et mince de cendres et de roches, repr\u00e9sentant un style d&rsquo;\u00e9ruption diff\u00e9rent de celui des caract\u00e9ristiques pyroclastiques pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment identifi\u00e9es\u00a0\u00bb, explique David Horvath, auteur principal de l&rsquo;\u00e9tude. \u00ab\u00a0Cette \u00e9ruption aurait pu cracher des cendres jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 9,7 km dans l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re de Mars.
