Or seuls environ 10% des ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes en ont, quand certaines preuves sugg\u00e8rent que les com\u00e8tes en comportent plus largement.<\/p>\n<p>Le professeur s&rsquo;est dit enthousiasm\u00e9 par la perspective, gr\u00e2ce au nouveau t\u00e9lescope de l&rsquo;Observatoire Vera Rubin qui doit \u00eatre op\u00e9rationnel l&rsquo;ann\u00e9e prochaine au Chili, de peut-\u00eatre pouvoir observer l&rsquo;attraction gravitationnelle sur les com\u00e8tes. Cela \u00ab\u00a0sera extr\u00eamement important pour faire des pr\u00e9visions sur les 100 prochaines ann\u00e9es, pour savoir si quelque chose de f\u00e2cheux pourrait nous arriver\u00a0\u00bb, dit-il.<\/p>\n<p>Les auteurs ont calcul\u00e9 qu&rsquo;un fragment de com\u00e8te pourrait frapper la Terre \u00e0 une fr\u00e9quence de plusieurs centaines de millions d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es. La limite externe du nuage de Oort, qui formerait la fronti\u00e8re gravitationnelle du Syst\u00e8me solaire1, se situerait \u00e0 plus d&rsquo;un millier de fois la distance s\u00e9parant le Soleil de Neptune, entre une et deux ann\u00e9es-lumi\u00e8re du Soleil et plus du quart de la distance \u00e0 Proxima du Centaure, l&rsquo;\u00e9toile la plus proche du Soleil. Il n&rsquo;est d&rsquo;ailleurs pas exclu qu&rsquo;il existe un continuum d&rsquo;objets entre le nuage de Oort solaire et un nuage similaire entourant le syst\u00e8me Alpha Centauri.<\/p>\n<p>Bien qu&rsquo;aucune observation directe n&rsquo;ait \u00e9t\u00e9 faite d&rsquo;un tel nuage, les astronomes, en se fondant sur les analyses des orbites des com\u00e8tes, pensent g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement qu&rsquo;il est l&rsquo;origine de la plupart d&rsquo;entre elles.<\/p>\n<p>Les objets dans le nuage de Oort sont largement compos\u00e9s de glaces, comme l&rsquo;eau, l&rsquo;ammoniac et le m\u00e9thane.
