Cr\u00e9dits : NASA\/Michael Studinger<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Un nouveau volcan en activit\u00e9 a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9couvert sous la calotte glac\u00e9e de l&rsquo;Antarctique par des sismologues am\u00e9ricains. Les enregistrements r\u00e9alis\u00e9s sugg\u00e8rent qu&rsquo;il pourrait entrer en \u00e9ruption dans l&rsquo;avenir.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">A l\u2019Ouest du continent Antarctique s\u2019\u00e9tend la Terre Marie Byrd, une vaste r\u00e9gion si hostile et isol\u00e9e qu\u2019il s\u2019agit du seul territoire de l\u2019Antarctique dont aucun \u00c9tat n\u2019a jamais revendiqu\u00e9 la souverainet\u00e9, faute d&rsquo;avoir les moyens -et encore moins les raisons- de s&rsquo;y installer. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">De ce fait, c\u2019est aussi la seule r\u00e9gion au monde \u00e0 ne compter aucun gouvernement ni habitant permanent. En somme, la Terre Marie Byrd est un lieu ignor\u00e9 de tous, et dont tout semble indiquer qu\u2019il le restera encore longtemps\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Pourtant, cette r\u00e9gion pourrait bien faire parler d\u2019elle un jour prochain. Car les grondements actuellement produits par ce volcan enfoui sous la glace seraient, selon les sismologues am\u00e9ricains, susceptibles d&rsquo;annoncer la survenue d\u2019une \u00e9ruption. Si cet \u00e9v\u00e8nement est bien \u00e9videmment impossible \u00e0 dater,\u00a0 les auteurs de la d\u00e9couverte s\u2019accordent en revanche \u00e0 penser qu\u2019il pourrait entra\u00eener une fonte massive de la base de la couche de glace situ\u00e9e aux alentours de ce volcan. Avec \u00e0 la cl\u00e9, un possible impact sur le niveau de l\u2019oc\u00e9an.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">A l\u2019origine de cette d\u00e9couverte, il y a la d\u00e9tection en 2010 et 2011 de deux \u00ab essaims sismiques \u00bb, enregistr\u00e9s \u00e0 55 km au sud du Executive Committee Range, une cha\u00eene montagneuse constitu\u00e9e elle-m\u00eame de 5 volcans. Qu\u2019est-ce qu\u2019un essaim sismique ? Il s\u2019agit d\u2019un \u00e9pisode au cours duquel une activit\u00e9 sismique est g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9e en un lieu pr\u00e9cis, pendant plusieurs semaines ou m\u00eame plusieurs mois, et qui se manifeste par une succession de secousses de magnitudes vari\u00e9es sans que l\u2019on puisse d\u00e9terminer avec certitude quand la magnitude maximale est atteinte.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Or, selon la sismologue Amanda Lough (Universit\u00e9 de Washington de St. Louis, Etats-Unis) et ses coll\u00e8gues, une telle activit\u00e9 sismique est la signature quasi-certaine d\u2019un volcan en activit\u00e9. En effet, l&rsquo;\u00e9paisseur de la couche de glace situ\u00e9e \u00e0 cet endroit n&rsquo;est \u00ab\u00a0que\u00a0\u00bb de 1 km environ, alors que les secousses ont \u00e9t\u00e9 localis\u00e9es \u00e0 plus de 25 km de profondeur&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Pour approfondir leurs analyses, les auteurs de l&rsquo;\u00e9tude ont \u00e9galement r\u00e9alis\u00e9 des relev\u00e9s au radar. Ces mesures leur ont permis de d\u00e9couvrir l&rsquo;existence d&rsquo;une \u00e9paisse couche de cendres, situ\u00e9e \u00e0 1,4 km de profondeur. Selon les sismologues am\u00e9ricains, cette couche de cendres serait \u00e2g\u00e9e de 8000 ans seulement, et proviendrait de l&rsquo;\u00e9ruption du Mont Waesche, le volcan situ\u00e9 le plus au sud parmi les 5 volcans qui constituent la cha\u00eene montagneuse du Executive Committee Range. Or cette d\u00e9couverte, associ\u00e9e \u00e0 la d\u00e9tection d&rsquo;une probable activit\u00e9 magmatique souterraine, renforce l&rsquo;hypoth\u00e8se selon laquelle il existerait bel et bien un volcan en activit\u00e9 -ou en voie d&rsquo;entrer en activit\u00e9- au sud de la cha\u00eene montagneuse du Executive Committee Range. Si les scientifiques excluent la possibilit\u00e9 que l&rsquo;\u00e9paisse couche de glace situ\u00e9e au-dessus du volcan fonde int\u00e9gralement, ils indiquent en revanche que cela pourrait entra\u00eener la fonte de la base de cette couche de glace. Ce qui pourrait alors avoir un impact important sur le m\u00e9canisme de fonte de la glace actuellement en cours en Antarctique.
