La fonte massive de la calotte glaciaire de l&rsquo;Antarctique occidental a \u00e9t\u00e9 l&rsquo;une des principales causes de l&rsquo;\u00e9l\u00e9vation du niveau de la mer au cours d&rsquo;une p\u00e9riode connue comme la derni\u00e8re p\u00e9riode interglaciaire (il y a 129 000 \u00e0 116 000 ans). Il est bord\u00e9 par de grandes zones de glace flottante, appel\u00e9es plates-formes de glace, qui prot\u00e8gent la partie centrale de la feuille.
