En effet, leurs tailles d\u00e9pendent fortement des variations saisonni\u00e8res de temp\u00e9ratures, les \u00e9t\u00e9s chauds sont par exemple marqu\u00e9s par des cernes plus larges. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 des analyses dendrochronologiques r\u00e9alis\u00e9es il y a quelques ann\u00e9es, des chercheurs avaient d\u00e9montr\u00e9 que notre climat avait peu chang\u00e9 au cours des deux derniers mill\u00e9naires, avant la r\u00e9volution industrielle.<\/p>\n<p>Une nouvelle \u00e9tude, toujours bas\u00e9e sur l&rsquo;analyse des cernes de bois, remet maintenant ce r\u00e9sultat en cause. Selon Jan Esper de la Johannes Gutenberg University (Allemagne), l&rsquo;h\u00e9misph\u00e8re nord aurait subi un long refroidissement durant pr\u00e8s de 2.000 ans, approximativement \u00e0 partir de l&rsquo;\u00e9poque romaine. Ses travaux, pr\u00e9sent\u00e9s dans la revue Nature Climate Change, ont tenu compte de la densit\u00e9 du bois \u00e0 l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur des anneaux de croissance. Par rapport aux pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes estimations, l&rsquo;Angleterre aurait pu profiter d&rsquo;un climat plus chaud que pr\u00e9vu en \u00e9t\u00e9 au d\u00e9but de notre \u00e8re, ce qui justifierait le succ\u00e8s de la culture des vignes au nord de ce territoire par les Romains.<\/p>\n<p>Le climat pass\u00e9 r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 par des carottages de pins<br \/>\nDes carottages ont \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9s par l&rsquo;\u00e9quipe de Jan Esper sur 537 pins sylvestres Pinus sylvestris vivants, ou sur des troncs immerg\u00e9s (parfois depuis plus de 1.500 ans), en Finlande et en Su\u00e8de. Le trait noir repr\u00e9sente l&rsquo;\u00e9volution moyenne du climat \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9chelle de la d\u00e9cennie ou du centenaire. Cet ajustement met en \u00e9vidence les p\u00e9riodes chaudes et froides. La ligne en pointill\u00e9s rouges pr\u00e9sente la tendance au refroidissement de l&rsquo;h\u00e9misph\u00e8re nord, en \u00e9t\u00e9, durant les 2.000 ans qui ont pr\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 la r\u00e9volution industrielle.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>La reconstitution des temp\u00e9ratures d&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9 (entre juin et ao\u00fbt) a mis en \u00e9vidence une succession de p\u00e9riodes chaudes (\u00e9poques romaine et m\u00e9di\u00e9vale) et froides (aux VIe et XIVe si\u00e8cle). Le climat aurait donc davantage vari\u00e9 dans le pass\u00e9 par rapport aux pr\u00e9dictions, \u00e9tablies notamment par Michael Mann de la Pennsylvania State University qui a produit le c\u00e9l\u00e8bre graphique de la crosse de hockey. Entre les ann\u00e9es 21 et 50 apr\u00e8s J.-C., la temp\u00e9rature d&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9 moyenne de la Scandinavie devait \u00eatre sup\u00e9rieure de 1,05 \u00b0C par rapport \u00e0 celle mesur\u00e9e entre 1951 et 1980.
