Publi\u00e9e dans Geophysical Research Letters, leur analyse, men\u00e9e par une \u00e9quipe internationale, et coordonn\u00e9e par une scientifique du CNRS de l\u2019Institut des g\u00e9osciences de l\u2019environnement (CNRS\/IRD\/UGA\/Grenoble INP)1, montre une pollution atmosph\u00e9rique tr\u00e8s significative en m\u00e9taux toxiques : la pr\u00e9sence de plomb et d\u2019antimoine (dont c\u2019est le premier enregistrement dans la glace alpine ancienne) s\u2019av\u00e8rent li\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019activit\u00e9 mini\u00e8re et \u00e0 la production de plomb et d\u2019argent des Romains, donc bien avant le d\u00e9but de l\u2019\u00e8re industrielle.<\/p><div class=\"1665f18d14f35dd9e7566e1a8ac9a3e9\" data-index=\"2\" style=\"float: none; margin:10px 0 10px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n     data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2860849627502538\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"3019501113\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>Bien que moins bien dat\u00e9e qu\u2019au Groenland, l\u2019archive alpine retrace les grandes p\u00e9riodes de prosp\u00e9rit\u00e9 de l\u2019Antiquit\u00e9 romaine (cf. figure 1), avec deux maximums d\u2019\u00e9mission de plomb bien distincts : durant la R\u00e9publique (entre 350 et 100 ans av. J.-C.), puis l\u2019Empire (entre 0 et 200 ans apr. J.-C.). Les Romains extrayaient le minerai de plomb argentif\u00e8re pour produire le plomb n\u00e9cessaire \u00e0 la fabrication des conduites d\u2019eau, et l\u2019argent pour la monnaie. Le proc\u00e9d\u00e9 de s\u00e9paration plomb-argent passait par une fusion du minerai \u00e0 1200\u00b0C, ce qui entra\u00eenait d\u2019importantes \u00e9missions de plomb dans l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re comme l\u2019avaient d\u00e9j\u00e0 montr\u00e9 des archives continentales telles les tourbi\u00e8res, dont il est cependant difficile de d\u00e9duire une information globale \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle europ\u00e9enne.
