Il s\u2019agit de la \u00ab\u2009reidite\u2009\u00bb, souvent associ\u00e9e aux impacts de m\u00e9t\u00e9orites.<\/p>\n<p>Les chercheurs de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 Curtin (Australie) ont fait une d\u00e9couverte rarissime, rapport\u00e9e dans un article scientifique publi\u00e9 dans la revue<em>&nbsp;Geology<\/em>&nbsp;le 27 septembre 2018. Il s\u2019agit d\u2019un min\u00e9ral tr\u00e8s rare qui se forme \u00e0 partir du zircon (ZrSiO4) lorsque ce dernier est soumis \u00e0 de fortes pressions \u2013 30&nbsp;GPa (gigapascals) \u2013 et \u00e0 des temp\u00e9ratures tr\u00e8s \u00e9lev\u00e9es. La reidite est un polymorphe du zircon, ce qui signifie que celle-ci a une composition chimique identique au zircon, mais une structure cristalline diff\u00e9rente.<\/p>\n<p>Pas moins de 10 fois plus dense que le zircon (5,2&nbsp;g\/cm3), la reidite a \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s rarement d\u00e9couverte sur Terre \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tat naturel. Selon Aaron Cavosie, principal meneur de l\u2019\u00e9tude,&nbsp;<em>\u00ab\u2009la totalit\u00e9 de la reidite form\u00e9e dans l\u2019histoire g\u00e9ologique tiendrait sous un ongle\u2009\u00bb<\/em>. Il se pourrait \u00e9galement que le diam\u00e8tre du crat\u00e8re soit sup\u00e9rieur \u00e0 100 km, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire plus que ce l\u2019on pensait, et ce en raison d\u2019une puissance sous-estim\u00e9e de l\u2019impact. Dans le cas o\u00f9 cette valeur serait confirm\u00e9e, le crat\u00e8re de Woodleigh deviendrait le plus grand d\u2019Australie et un des plus imposants au monde. Il serait alors \u00e0 placer dans la m\u00eame cat\u00e9gorie que le crat\u00e8re de Chicxulub (Mexique), auquel on associe la disparition des dinosaures\u2009!<\/p>\n<p>Cette d\u00e9couverte ne permettra malheureusement pas \u00e0 l\u2019Australie de faire fortune. \u00ab Bien qu\u2019elle soit infiniment plus rare que l\u2019or ou le diamant, la reidite n\u2019a h\u00e9las aucune valeur commerciale \u00bb, sourit Aaron Cavosie.
