Pr\u00e8s de 50 ans plus tard, l\u2019agence spatiale offre \u00e0 un groupe restreint de chercheurs l\u2019occasion extraordinaire d\u2019\u00e9tudier ces \u00e9chantillons non ouverts et non ternis.<\/p>\n<p>Deux propositions visant \u00e0 \u00e9tudier des \u00e9chantillons Apollo non ouverts ont \u00e9t\u00e9 s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9es par la NASA dans le cadre de son programme d&rsquo;analyse des \u00e9chantillons Apollo Next Generation, ou ANGSA, selon un communiqu\u00e9 de presse de la NASA Goddard. Les mat\u00e9riaux lunaires ont \u00e9t\u00e9 rassembl\u00e9s au cours des missions Apollo 15 (la quatri\u00e8me mission lunaire, qui a d\u00e9but\u00e9e le 26 juillet 1971) et Apollo 17 (la sixi\u00e8me et derni\u00e8re mission lunaire, qui a d\u00e9but\u00e9 le 7 d\u00e9cembre 1972). Certains des \u00e9chantillons retourn\u00e9s n&rsquo;ont jamais \u00e9t\u00e9 ouverts pour \u00e9viter une contamination \u00e9ventuelle, tandis que d&rsquo;autres mat\u00e9riaux lunaires, apr\u00e8s un traitement initial, ont \u00e9t\u00e9 referm\u00e9s et plac\u00e9s dans une chambre froide.<\/p>\n<p>Le but de tout cela \u00e9tait de garantir l&rsquo;int\u00e9grit\u00e9 des mat\u00e9riaux lunaires pour une \u00e9tude ult\u00e9rieure, permettant aux futurs scientifiques \u00e9quip\u00e9s de nouvelles technologies de pouvoir les analyser. Etant donn\u00e9 qu&rsquo;aucun mat\u00e9riau lunaire n&rsquo;est revenu sur Terre depuis 1972, il s&rsquo;agissait d&rsquo;une id\u00e9e remarquablement pertinente.<\/p>\n<p>Le programme ANGSA vise, entre autres, d&rsquo;effectuer des travaux qui \u00e9claireront les futures missions lunaires pour les d\u00e9cennies \u00e0 venir. Les chercheurs chercheront \u00e0 savoir si les m\u00e9thodes utilis\u00e9es pour stocker les mat\u00e9riaux Apollo ont r\u00e9ellement fonctionn\u00e9, en les gardant aussi pures et intactes que possible. C&rsquo;est vraiment une question d&rsquo;instrumentation plus avanc\u00e9e et de m\u00e9thodes qui nous permettent de trouver et de mesurer ces mol\u00e9cules maintenant. \u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;\u00e9quipe d&rsquo;Elsila \u00e9tudiera les compos\u00e9s organiques volatils &#8211; les pr\u00e9curseurs des acides amin\u00e9s &#8211; dans les \u00e9chantillons, dont l&rsquo;existence est connue dans les mat\u00e9riaux, \u00e0 partir d&rsquo;\u00e9tudes ant\u00e9rieures. Par exemple, ils aimeraient savoir si le stockage des mat\u00e9riaux dans le vide ou dans un entrep\u00f4t frigorifique conserve mieux les compos\u00e9s volatils que les conditions habituelles, \u00e0 savoir un stockage \u00e0 temp\u00e9rature ambiante sous azote propre et fluide. Nous ne pourrions pas faire cette recherche sans ouvrir les \u00e9chantillons congel\u00e9s. \u201d<\/p>\n<p>Avec ses coll\u00e8gues de l&rsquo;UA, Barnes incorporera la roche dans de la r\u00e9sine et la d\u00e9coupera en sections minces microscopiques pour une analyse chimique. Ces tranches seront \u00e9galement mises \u00e0 la disposition des futurs chercheurs.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019autre \u00e9quipe s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9e pour le projet ANGSA sera dirig\u00e9e par Natalie Curran et Barbara Cohen du laboratoire de recherche sur les gaz rares de l\u2019Atlantique (MNGRL) de Goddard. Ils seront aid\u00e9s par des chercheurs du Mus\u00e9e national d&rsquo;histoire naturelle Smithsonian et de l&rsquo;Institut Carnegie.
