Pendant longtemps personne n\u2019a cru ces descriptions apocalyptiques. Des chercheurs \u00e9cossais ont compris aujourd&rsquo;hui comment elles se formaient.<\/p>\n<p>La disparition de navires dans des conditions myst\u00e9rieuses a permis d\u2019envisager s\u00e9rieusement l\u2019existence de ces vagues beaucoup plus hautes que les autres. Il a fallu attendre le 1er janvier 1995, pour que l\u2019une d\u2019entre elles soit mesur\u00e9e pour la premi\u00e8re fois.<\/p>\n<p>Baptis\u00e9e \u00ab vague du nouvel an \u00bb elle est aussi connue comme la \u00ab vague Draupner \u00bb du nom de la plateforme p\u00e9troli\u00e8re sur laquelle elle s\u2019est \u00e9cras\u00e9e en pleine mer du Nord. Cette plate-forme qui disposait d\u2019une sonde capable de calculer l\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9vation de la surface de la mer a enregistr\u00e9 ce jour-l\u00e0 une vague de 26 m\u00e8tres de hauteur ! Monstrueux.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019existence de vagues sc\u00e9l\u00e9rates \u00e9tait d\u00e9sormais reconnue officiellement.<\/p>\n<p>Qu\u2019est ce qui caract\u00e9rise ces vagues ?<br \/>\nContrairement aux tsunamis qui ne s\u2019\u00e9l\u00e8vent qu\u2019\u00e0 l\u2019approche des c\u00f4tes, ces vagues peuvent surgir en pleine mer en eaux calmes comme pendant des temp\u00eates.<\/p>\n<p>Pour \u00eatre une vague sc\u00e9l\u00e9rate il faut que sa hauteur soit deux fois plus importante que la hauteur moyenne des vagues qui l\u2019entourent. Mais ils ont pu cr\u00e9er une mini-vague dans un bassin pour \u00e9tudier pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment la physique du ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne.<\/p>\n<p>Et ils r\u00e9v\u00e8lent que ces vagues sc\u00e9l\u00e9rates sont li\u00e9es \u00e0 la rencontre de deux fronts de vagues qui circulent dans des directions diff\u00e9rentes et qui se rencontrent \u00e0 exactement 120\u00b0.<\/p>\n<p>C\u2019est la conjonction de ces deux syst\u00e8mes de mers crois\u00e9es qui donnent naissance \u00e0 ces vagues cauchemardesques. Et bien figurez-vous que ce comportement de d\u00e9ferlante n\u2019avait jamais \u00e9t\u00e9 observ\u00e9 auparavant.<\/p>\n<p>Que peut-on esp\u00e9rer maintenant avec cette d\u00e9couverte ?<br \/>\nLes scientifiques en comprenant ce m\u00e9canisme esp\u00e8rent pouvoir anticiper les vagues sc\u00e9l\u00e9rates afin de pr\u00e9venir les accidents et sauver des vies.<\/p>\n<p>Ces vagues ont en effet d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019origine de naufrages ou d\u2019accidents s\u00e9rieux.<\/p>\n<p>Les passagers du Jean Nicoli, un paquebot qui faisait la liaison entre Ajaccio et Marseille en mars 2017 se souviendront longtemps du mur d\u2019eau estim\u00e9 entre 15 et 20 m\u00e8tres, qui s\u2019est abattu sur leur bateau.<\/p>\n<p>Heureusement aucune victime n\u2019a \u00e9t\u00e9 a d\u00e9plor\u00e9e. Mais les d\u00e9g\u00e2ts ont \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s importants et le navire a \u00e9t\u00e9 oblig\u00e9 d\u2019accoster en urgence \u00e0 Toulon.<\/p>\n<p>Les vagues sc\u00e9l\u00e9rates peuvent mesurer jusqu\u2019\u00e0 30 m\u00e8tres et peuvent sans probl\u00e8me couler des bateaux.
