Bien que l\u2019existence de glace dans cette r\u00e9gion soit improbable, apr\u00e8s tout, il s\u2019agit d\u2019une plan\u00e8te avec une temp\u00e9rature de 426 \u00b0 C \u00e0 sa surface, l\u2019existence de glace est un sujet \u00e0 sp\u00e9culation depuis environ 20 ans. Cela n\u2019a \u00e9t\u00e9 confirm\u00e9 par le vaisseau spatial MESSENGER dans la r\u00e9gion polaire.<\/p>\n<p>D&rsquo;apr\u00e8s les donn\u00e9es de MESSENGER, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 estim\u00e9 que la plan\u00e8te Mercure pouvait contenir entre 100 et 1 000 milliards de tonnes d&rsquo;eau glac\u00e9e aux deux p\u00f4les, avec une profondeur pouvant aller jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 20 m\u00e8tres \u00e0 certains endroits. Et m\u00eame en l&rsquo;absence d&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re, il existe un ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne de convection thermique, c&rsquo;est-\u00e0-dire qu&rsquo;il n&rsquo;y a pas de transfert de chaleur par l&rsquo;air depuis les r\u00e9gions les plus chaudes.<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;id\u00e9e que la glace puisse exister dans ces r\u00e9gions remonte aux ann\u00e9es 1990, lorsque les t\u00e9lescopes radar sur Terre d\u00e9tectaient des points hautement r\u00e9fl\u00e9chissants au sein des crat\u00e8res polaires. Cela a \u00e9t\u00e9 confirm\u00e9 lorsque la sonde spatiale MESSENGER a d\u00e9tect\u00e9 des signaux compatibles avec la glace. Ces stations pourraient transformer les gisements d\u2019eau en hydrazine, ce qui r\u00e9duirait consid\u00e9rablement les co\u00fbts des missions \u00e0 longue port\u00e9e dans l\u2019ensemble du syst\u00e8me solaire.<\/p>\n<p>Mais si nous revenons un peu plus loin dans notre r\u00e9alit\u00e9, ces \u00e9tudes de Mercure offrent \u00e9galement de nouvelles perspectives sur la formation et l\u2019\u00e9volution du syst\u00e8me solaire.<\/p>\n<p>La sonde spatiale MESSENGER a \u00e9t\u00e9 la premi\u00e8re \u00e0 s&rsquo;\u00eatre mise en orbite autour de la plan\u00e8te Mercure. Les sept instruments scientifiques qu\u2019elle transportait, ont d\u00e9roul\u00e9 l\u2019histoire de cette plan\u00e8te du syst\u00e8me solaire. En seulement quatre ans de mission, MESSENGER a acquis plus de 250 000 images et de nombreux autres ensembles de donn\u00e9es.
