Les chercheurs estiment que la temp\u00e9rature de surface martienne aurait augment\u00e9 de quelque 0,65\u00b0C entre les ann\u00e9es 70 et les ann\u00e9es 90, soit depuis l&rsquo;atterrissage des sondes am\u00e9ricaines Viking et des premiers relev\u00e9s pr\u00e9cis. Si une zone couverte de neige fond, sa r\u00e9flectivit\u00e9, donc son alb\u00e9do, diminue en proportion. Ainsi, si la glace qui recouvre l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an Arctique r\u00e9fl\u00e9chit 85% du rayonnement solaire, l&rsquo;eau n&rsquo;en renvoie plus que 15%. Le reste est absorb\u00e9 et contribue \u00e0 r\u00e9chauffer l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an, ce qui acc\u00e9l\u00e8re le processus, etc. Le m\u00eame ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne est observ\u00e9 sur Mars, \u00e0 partir d&rsquo;autres \u00e9l\u00e9ments: les temp\u00eates soul\u00e8vent la poussi\u00e8re qui se d\u00e9pose sur les calottes en les assombrissant. Leur l&rsquo;alb\u00e9do diminue, ce qui entra\u00eene une absorption plus importante du rayonnement solaire.
