Assembl\u00e9 au Cnes (Centre national d\u2019\u00e9tudes spatiales) \u00e0 Toulouse, Taranis va d\u00e9coller fin 2019. Avec l\u2019id\u00e9e d\u2019en apprendre plus sur l\u2019antimati\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 l\u2019assaut de la \u00ab\u2009face cach\u00e9e\u2009\u00bb des orages, le satellite Taranis va \u00e9tudier depuis l\u2019espace les ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes scientifiques lumineux et radiatifs qui d\u00e9coulent de ce type d\u2019intemp\u00e9ries, afin d\u2019aider l\u2019aviation militaire et peut-\u00eatre d\u2019en apprendre plus sur l\u2019antimati\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<p>Des milliers d\u2019orages qui s\u00e9vissent chaque jour, nous ne connaissons en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral que la partie la plus facilement observable depuis la Terre\u2009: les \u00e9clairs et le tonnerre.<\/p>\n<p>Mais \u00ab\u2009les orages donnent lieu \u00e0 des ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes beaucoup plus larges que ce qu\u2019on imagine\u2009\u00bb, explique Christophe Bastien-Thiry, chef du projet Taranis.<\/p>\n<p>Il va \u00e9tudier les \u00ab\u2009Elfes\u2009\u00bb et les \u00ab\u2009Sprites\u2009\u00bb<br \/>\nCe petit satellite de 185\u2009kg, qui vient d\u2019entrer dans sa phase d\u2019assemblage dans les salles d\u2019int\u00e9gration du Cnes (Centre national d\u2019\u00e9tudes spatiales), \u00e0 Toulouse, va partir fin 2019 \u00e9tudier ce qu\u2019on appelle les \u00c9v\u00e9nements lumineux transitoires (TLE).<\/p>\n<p>Il sera par exemple charg\u00e9 d\u2019observer les \u00ab\u2009Elfes\u2009\u00bb, ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes courants qui consistent en un halo lumineux en expansion rapide situ\u00e9 \u00e0 une centaine de kilom\u00e8tres d\u2019altitude, au-dessus des nuages d\u2019orage.<\/p>\n<p>Bleus, blancs ou rouges selon l\u2019altitude, les \u00ab\u2009Sprites\u2009\u00bb &#8211; beaucoup plus rares &#8211; forment un v\u00e9ritable feu d\u2019artifice lumineux sous forme filamentaire qu\u2019on peut observer pendant quelques millisecondes.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HVnLLAsadaI?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=fr-FR&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>En orbite polaire \u00e0 600\u2009km d\u2019altitude<br \/>\nTaranis &#8211; dieu du Ciel et de l\u2019orage dans la mythologie celtique gauloise &#8211; sera la toute premi\u00e8re mission spatiale enti\u00e8rement d\u00e9di\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tude de ces ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes d\u00e9couverts dans les ann\u00e9es 1990.<\/p>\n<p>En orbite polaire \u00e0 600\u2009km d\u2019altitude, le satellite couvrira en 36 heures l\u2019int\u00e9gralit\u00e9 de la plan\u00e8te. Il enregistrera un maximum de cette activit\u00e9 lumineuse, gr\u00e2ce aux quatre photom\u00e8tres et dix micro-cam\u00e9ras dont il est muni.<\/p><div class=\"1665f18d14f35dd9e7566e1a8ac9a3e9\" data-index=\"2\" style=\"float: none; margin:10px 0 10px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n     data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2860849627502538\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"3019501113\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>Trois instruments seront aussi charg\u00e9s d\u2019enregistrer les bouff\u00e9es d\u2019ondes \u00e9lectromagn\u00e9tiques qui accompagnent les TLE\u2009: selon Christophe Bastien-Thiry, elles seraient porteuses de \u00ab\u2009pr\u00e9cieuses informations sur l\u2019origine de ces ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes\u2009\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u2009C\u2019est une mission assez ambitieuse par le nombre d\u2019instruments embarqu\u00e9s et par la couverture du spectre physique, qui va du visible, au radiatif en passant par des photons gamma\u2009\u00bb, a soulign\u00e9 le chercheur.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 la recherche de l\u2019antimati\u00e8re<br \/>\nCar en plus des signaux lumineux, les scientifiques ont constat\u00e9 un autre type de ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne au-dessus des orages\u2009: \u00ab\u2009dans certaines conditions, l\u2019orage va se comporter comme un acc\u00e9l\u00e9rateur de particules et g\u00e9n\u00e9rer une bouff\u00e9e ultra-br\u00e8ve de photons gamma\u2009\u00bb, d\u00e9taille le scientifique.<\/p>\n<p>Ce \u00ab\u2009flash gamma terrestre\u2009\u00bb (TGF) s\u2019apparente en termes d\u2019intensit\u00e9 \u00e0 la puissance d\u2019une explosion nucl\u00e9aire, mais sur une dur\u00e9e beaucoup plus br\u00e8ve.<\/p>\n<p>Bien que naturel, ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne n\u2019en est pas moins \u00ab\u2009inqui\u00e9tant\u2009\u00bb selon M. Bastien-Thiry, car il repr\u00e9sente \u00ab\u2009potentiellement un danger pour les \u00e9quipements ou le personnel\u2009\u00bb des jets priv\u00e9s ou de l\u2019aviation militaire qui, contrairement aux avions de ligne, peuvent parfois survoler les orages.<\/p>\n<p>Le Commissariat \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9nergie atomique (CEA), \u00e0 l\u2019initiative du projet, esp\u00e8re r\u00e9colter des donn\u00e9es sur ces radiations, m\u00eame si elles \u00ab\u2009ne peuvent pas \u00eatre exploit\u00e9es directement \u00e0 des fins nucl\u00e9aires d\u2019armements\u2009\u00bb, pr\u00e9cise le chercheur.<\/p>\n<p>Globalement, l\u2019exp\u00e9dition sera l\u2019occasion pour les chercheurs et le CEA d\u2019approfondir \u00ab\u2009la connaissance pure de la machine thermique et climatique qu\u2019est la Terre\u2009\u00bb, et d\u2019en apprendre peut-\u00eatre plus sur l\u2019antimati\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<p>Un projet \u00e0 90\u2009% fran\u00e7ais<br \/>\nCar les scientifiques sont formels\u2009: de l\u2019antimati\u00e8re, exact oppos\u00e9 de la mati\u00e8re, accompagne les \u00e9missions de bouff\u00e9es gamma. Elle est reconnaissable gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 \u00ab\u2009l\u2019\u00e9mission d\u2019un photon d\u2019une \u00e9nergie tr\u00e8s connue des physiciens\u2009\u00bb lorsqu\u2019elle s\u2019annihile au contact de la mati\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<p>Enti\u00e8rement financ\u00e9 par le Cnes \u00e0 hauteur d\u2019environ 110 millions d\u2019euros, le projet Taranis &#8211; \u00e0 90\u2009% fran\u00e7ais &#8211; fait intervenir des chercheurs polonais, tch\u00e8ques et am\u00e9ricains (Standford et la Nasa).<\/p>\n<p>Le satellite devrait \u00eatre lanc\u00e9 fin 2019 depuis Kourou (Guyane) comme passager auxiliaire d\u2019un plus gros satellite espagnol.
