Des dizaines de milliers d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es sont n\u00e9cessaires pour amorcer la cro\u00fbte terrestre et g\u00e9n\u00e9rer suffisamment de magma \u00e9ruptif. Les recherches pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes des cristaux de quartz provenant de plusieurs super-\u00e9ruptions, y compris Long Valley, ont not\u00e9 qu&rsquo;elles poss\u00e8dent des jantes de surface distinctes. Ces \u00e9tudes ont conclu que les jantes se formaient en moins d&rsquo;un si\u00e8cle avant l&rsquo;\u00e9ruption.<\/p>\n<p>La nouvelle \u00e9tude utilise une m\u00e9thode plus pr\u00e9cise pour mesurer le temps de croissance des jantes sur des variations de concentration du titane dans le cristal. Le titane est l&rsquo;une des impuret\u00e9s qui est incorpor\u00e9 dans le quartz en des quantit\u00e9s appr\u00e9ciables et qui est diffus\u00e9 assez rapidement pour permettre le sondage d&rsquo;\u00e9chelles de temps jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 quelques simples minutes. Cependant, il est extr\u00eamement difficile de mesurer les petits niveaux de titane impliqu\u00e9s \u00e0 une r\u00e9solution spatiale suffisante. Ainsi, les chercheurs ont \u00e9tabli que la concentration de titane dans le quartz correspond directement \u00e0 la quantit\u00e9 de lumi\u00e8re produite lorsqu&rsquo;un mat\u00e9riau est bombard\u00e9 par des \u00e9lectrons, un effet appel\u00e9 cathodoluminescence. Plus de 70% du temps de croissance de la jante sont inf\u00e9rieurs \u00e0 1 an, montrant que les jantes en quartz ont augment\u00e9 principalement dans les jours \u00e0 mois avant l&rsquo;\u00e9ruption &#8230;. L&rsquo;Indon\u00e9sie a \u00e9t\u00e9 le site de la super-\u00e9ruption du Toba \u00e0 Sumatra il y a 75 000 ans et l&rsquo;\u00e9ruption de Tambora en 1815.
