La pression de son atmosph\u00e8re est en effet tr\u00e8s faible (elle repr\u00e9sente 1\/160e de celle de la Terre) et elle contient 95,32 % de CO2, seulement 2,7 % d&rsquo;azote et 0,13 % d&rsquo;oxyg\u00e8ne. La temp\u00e9rature moyenne \u00e0 sa surface est basse elle aussi : &#8211; 53 \u00b0C. L&rsquo;eau ne semble exister sur le sol que sous forme de glace. Toutefois, tout indique que dans un pass\u00e9 lointain, il y a environ quatre milliards d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es, la plan\u00e8te \u00e9tait bien plus accueillante, avec des oc\u00e9ans, une atmosph\u00e8re plus dense et plus chaude gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un effet de serre.<\/p>\n<p>C&rsquo;est en perdant son champ magn\u00e9tique que Mars aurait dilapid\u00e9 son atmosph\u00e8re (et une grande partie de son eau). La cause ? L&rsquo;\u00e9rosion provoqu\u00e9e par les vents solaires, si l&rsquo;on en croit les donn\u00e9es fournies par la sonde Maven de la Nasa. Ces deux conditions, absence de champ magn\u00e9tique entretenue par une dynamo interne qui ne fonctionne plus depuis longtemps et l&rsquo;absence d&rsquo;une atmosph\u00e8re \u00e9paisse, ont fait de notre voisine un monde froid et aride dont la surface est soumise au bombardement d\u00e9l\u00e9t\u00e8re des rayons cosmiques. Cela n&rsquo;a pas pour autant d\u00e9courag\u00e9 l&rsquo;humanit\u00e9 qui esp\u00e8re bien coloniser un jour la Plan\u00e8te rouge. Certains esp\u00e8rent m\u00eame la terrarformer en faisant fondre les masses de glace s\u00e8che et d&rsquo;eau qui recouvrent ses p\u00f4les.<\/p>\n<p>Un bouclier magn\u00e9tique artificiel pour prot\u00e9ger Mars<\/p>\n<p>En mati\u00e8re de terraformation (action de rendre une plan\u00e8te semblable \u00e0 la Terre), il y a la m\u00e9thode forte et la m\u00e9thode douce. Alors qu&rsquo;Elon Musk envisage de bombarder Mars avec des bombes nucl\u00e9aires pour faire fondre la glace martienne, d&rsquo;autres pensent \u00e0 des solutions moins radicales. Il serait en l&rsquo;esp\u00e8ce question de positionner un bouclier magn\u00e9tique au point de Lagrange L1 pour que la plan\u00e8te ne subisse plus les incessants bombardements solaires.<\/p>\n<p>Ce bouclier consisterait en un dip\u00f4le magn\u00e9tique g\u00e9ant assez puissant pour g\u00e9n\u00e9rer ce champ magn\u00e9tique artificiel. Des simulations informatiques montrent qu&rsquo;en seulement quelques ann\u00e9es, ce dispositif permettrait de restaurer la pression atmosph\u00e9rique martienne pour qu&rsquo;elle atteigne la moiti\u00e9 de la pression terrestre. Cette protection emp\u00eachera l\u2019\u00e9rosion de l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re martienne. Celle-ci deviendra plus dense, la pression augmentera en m\u00eame temps que la temp\u00e9rature au sol.<\/p>\n<p>Selon les simulations, si les vents solaires sont stopp\u00e9s par le champ magn\u00e9tique artificiel, l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re martienne pourrait retrouver la moiti\u00e9 de la pression atmosph\u00e9rique terrestre en quelques ann\u00e9es seulement !<\/p>\n<p>Alors que l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re s\u2019\u00e9paissit, le climat martien va changer et la temp\u00e9rature grimper de 4\u00b0 C. Ce serait alors suffisant pour faire fondre le dioxyde de carbone qui se trouve sous forme de glace dans les calottes polaires de Mars.<\/p>\n<p>Si cela se produit, le carbone dans l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re capturera la chaleur (comme c\u2019est le cas sur Terre) et cela provoquera un effet de serre qui fera fondre la glace d\u2019eau sur Mars.
