Un fort refroidissement de l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an Atlantique nord, pr\u00e9vu \u00e0 long terme par les mod\u00e8les informatiques sur l&rsquo;\u00e9volution du climat, a de fortes chances d&rsquo;avoir lieu au cours du 21e si\u00e8cle. Il aurait lieu plus rapidement qu&rsquo;anticip\u00e9 jusqu&rsquo;alors, selon une \u00e9tude.<\/p>\n<p>Selon ces travaux parus mercredi dans la revue Nature communications, \u00abla probabilit\u00e9 d&rsquo;un refroidissement rapide de l&rsquo;Atlantique Nord au cours du 21e si\u00e8cle est de pr\u00e8s de 50%\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Or, la modification de la circulation des courants marins, dont le fameux Gulf Stream qui temp\u00e8re le climat de la Floride aux c\u00f4tes europ\u00e9ennes, \u00abpourrait entra\u00eener un bouleversement climatique sans pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent\u00bb, \u00e9crit l&rsquo;\u00e9quipe de chercheurs (CNRS\/Universit\u00e9 de Bordeaux et Universit\u00e9 de Southampton).<\/p>\n<p>En 2013, le Groupe d&rsquo;experts sur l&rsquo;\u00e9volution du climat (Giec), qui synth\u00e9tise les \u00e9tudes existantes, estimait qu&rsquo;un tel ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne s&rsquo;installerait progressivement et sur une \u00e9chelle de temps longue. Les grands courants marins, en brassant les eaux, transportent de la chaleur \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9chelle du globe et influencent fortement les climats terrestres.<\/p>\n<p>Influence de la mer du Labrador<\/p><div class=\"1665f18d14f35dd9e7566e1a8ac9a3e9\" data-index=\"2\" style=\"float: none; margin:10px 0 10px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n     data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2860849627502538\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"3019501113\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>Plusieurs mod\u00e8les informatiques pass\u00e9s au crible par les auteurs de l&rsquo;\u00e9tude montrent que la mer du Labrador, situ\u00e9e entre le Canada et le Groenland, pourrait enregistrer des baisses de temp\u00e9ratures moyennes de 2 \u00e0 3 degr\u00e9s, qui induiraient \u00e0 leur tour \u00abde fortes baisses des temp\u00e9ratures dans les r\u00e9gions c\u00f4ti\u00e8res de l&rsquo;Atlantique Nord\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>La mer du Labrador est le si\u00e8ge d&rsquo;un ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne dit de \u00abconvection\u00bb: en se refroidissant fortement en hiver, ses eaux de surface deviennent plus denses et plongent vers le fond. La chaleur des eaux profondes qui remontent est alors transf\u00e9r\u00e9e vers la surface et emp\u00eache la formation de banquise. Mais cette circulation entre eaux profondes et eaux de surface va \u00eatre modifi\u00e9e par le r\u00e9chauffement de la plan\u00e8te.<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;\u00e9tude parue mercredi s&rsquo;est concentr\u00e9e sur 11 mod\u00e8les informatiques qui reproduisaient le plus fid\u00e8lement les diff\u00e9rentes strates de temp\u00e9rature de l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an Atlantique nord. \u00abSur ces 11 mod\u00e8les, cinq simulent une baisse rapide des temp\u00e9ratures de l&rsquo;Atlantique Nord, soit 45%\u00bb, indiquent les chercheurs.
